Driving in China: Should You Even Try? (Short Answer: Probably Not)

Stay2CN | Getting Around | May 2026

I've lived here 4 years. I've never driven. Here's why you probably shouldn't either.

The License Problem:
Foreign licenses aren't valid in China. You need either:
• A Chinese driver's license (requires residence permit + theory test in Chinese)
• An international permit ONLY works if your home country has a bilateral agreement with China (most don't)

The Traffic Problem:
• Lane markings are suggestions
• Scooters appear from nowhere
• Horn usage is constant and aggressive
• Parking in cities is a nightmare
• GPS works but traffic predictions are unreliable

When Driving Makes Sense:
• Rural Yunnan, Guizhou, or Xinjiang where public transport is limited
• Road trips in Tibet (requires guide anyway)
• You're already an aggressive driver at home

The Better Options:
• Metro + Didi handles 95% of urban needs
• High-speed rail connects all major cities
• Hire a driver with car for day trips (¥400–800/day)
• Domestic flights are cheap and frequent

If You Absolutely Must Drive:
• Get a Chinese license (¥500–1,000, theory test available in some cities in English)
• Start in smaller cities, not Beijing/Shanghai
• Expect to pay for parking everywhere
• Dashcam is essential

Anyone actually driven in China? How was it?
