First-Hand Border Entry Experiences: What to Expect at Chinese Airports (2025–2026)

Stay2CN Guide | Border Entry Experiences | Updated May 2026

This isn't the official manual — it's the real "scene at the border." Here's what actually happens when you enter China.

Before Landing
• Flight attendants distribute arrival/departure cards
• Tip: Since Nov 2025, you can fill the arrival card online via NIA app/WeChat/Alipay — skip the paper form!

Immigration Process
For Visa-Free Transit (240-hour):
• Follow signs to "Foreigners" → look for "240-Hour Visa-Free Transit" counter
• Present passport + onward ticket
• Answer: purpose of visit, duration, next destination
• Typical time: 5–15 minutes
• No fees, no stamps in advance needed

For Visa Holders:
• Standard immigration queue
• Fingerprint scan (some airports)
• Stamp with entry date — check the date is correct!

Customs Declaration
• Green channel: nothing to declare
• Red channel: declare cash >¥20,000, valuables, electronics
• Most tourists walk straight through

Which Port Has Shortest Queues?
Based on traveler reports:
• Fastest: Chengdu Tianfu (TFU), Hangzhou (HGH), Xi'an (XIY)
• Moderate: Beijing Daxing (PKX), Shanghai Hongqiao (SHA)
• Busiest: Beijing Capital (PEK), Shanghai Pudong (PVG), Guangzhou (CAN)

Common Questions at Immigration
• "Where are you going?" → Show hotel booking or city name
• "How long will you stay?" → Match your onward ticket date
• "What is your occupation?" → Simple answer is fine

Real Traveler Tips
• Have your hotel name in Chinese ready
• Screenshot your onward ticket (WiFi can be spotty)
• Smile and be patient — officers are professional but strict
• Keep arrival card until departure
