Do I need a visa for a 2-hour layover in Beijing? (And other dumb questions I asked)

Before my first China trip I googled SO many questions that seem obvious now. Sharing in case someone else is in that phase.

Q: Do I need a visa for a 2-hour layover?
A: No. If you don't leave the international transit area, you don't need any visa.

Q: Can I drink the tap water?
A: Technically it's treated but NO. Everyone drinks bottled or boiled water. Just buy bottled.

Q: Is it safe to walk around at night?
A: Safer than most Western cities I've been to. Still use common sense though.

Q: Will my phone work?
A: If it's unlocked, yes. But you'll need a VPN for Google/Instagram/WhatsApp.

Q: Do I need to tip?
A: No. Tipping isn't customary and can confuse people.

Q: Can I use Uber?
A: Uber doesn't exist here. Use Didi.

Q: Is the food safe?
A: Generally yes. Eat at busy places, avoid raw stuff at street stalls.

Q: Do people speak English?
A: In hotels and tourist spots, usually. Everywhere else, not really. Download a translation app.

Q: Can I use my credit card everywhere?
A: No. Mobile payment (Alipay/WeChat) is king. Cards work at hotels and big malls. Cash works as backup.

Q: Will I get arrested for using a VPN?
A: No. Millions of people use them. Just don't make a public spectacle of it.

What dumb question did YOU have before your first China trip? No judgment.
