My company sponsored my work visa and then went bankrupt. Now what?

Yeah. This happened. Not fun. Sharing because it's more common than people think.

The situation:
Startup ran out of money. 30 people laid off overnight. My work permit was tied to this company.

What I learned about work permits:
• Your work permit is tied to your EMPLOYER, not you personally
• If the company goes under, your work permit becomes invalid
• You have 30 days to find a new employer and transfer, OR switch to a different visa type

What I actually did:
1. Filed for unemployment benefits (yes, foreigners can do this in China if you've paid into social insurance)
2. Started job hunting IMMEDIATELY
3. Found a new employer within 3 weeks
4. New company applied for work permit transfer
5. Got approved with 2 days to spare before my 30-day window closed

The stressful part:
I had to explain to my new employer that I needed them to move FAST. Some companies don't understand how tight the timeline is. I almost lost a good offer because HR was slow.

What I wish I'd known:
• Keep scanned copies of ALL your documents (degree, background check, old contracts)
• Maintain relationships with recruiters even when you're employed
• Have 3–6 months of living expenses saved (I had 2, was stressful)
• Know that unemployment benefits exist and how to claim them

If this happens to you:
Don't panic. 30 days is tight but doable if you act fast. Network hard. Be honest with potential employers about the timeline.

Anyone else survived a company collapse in China?
