The one policy change I'm actually worried about for 2027
Look, most visa policy changes lately have been GOOD. More countries added, longer stays, easier processes. But there's one thing on my radar that concerns me.
The digital yuan (e-CNY) push.
Right now it's optional. You can use Alipay, WeChat, cash, whatever. But the government is pushing e-CNY HARD. And it's not just another payment app — it's central bank digital currency.
Why this could matter for foreigners:
• If e-CNY becomes mandatory for certain transactions (metro, utilities, government services), and it's hard for foreigners to set up, daily life gets harder
• It could replace cash entirely in some contexts, and cash is currently the foreigner's backup plan
• The tracking implications — every transaction is visible to the central bank
Why it might be fine:
• Alipay and WeChat will probably still exist alongside it
• The government wants tourism, so they'll make it accessible
• Foreign card integration is improving, not getting worse
What I'm watching:
• Whether any city makes e-CNY mandatory for public transport
• Whether Alipay/WeChat foreign card support gets restricted (unlikely but possible)
• Whether cash acceptance actually declines further
My take:
China wants foreign visitors and expats. They're not going to make daily life impossible for us. But the payment landscape is shifting, and staying informed matters.
What policy change are you watching? Or am I overthinking this?
