I tried to ship a package home and learned Chinese postal logistics the hard way

Needed to send a box of stuff to the UK. Thought "how hard can it be?"

Step 1: Went to China Post. They asked me to list EVERY item with values. In Chinese.

Step 2: They opened my box and inspected everything. Negotiated whether my tea set was "new" for 5 minutes.

Step 3: 8.5kg. Options:
• Surface mail: ¥280, 2–3 months
• Air mail: ¥680, 2–3 weeks
• EMS: ¥920, 1 week

Chose surface mail because I'm cheap.

Result:
Arrived in UK 7 weeks later. UK customs charged £45. Box looked drop-kicked but contents survived.

What I'd do differently:
• Use DHL/FedEx for valuable/time-sensitive stuff
• Pack better — China Post is rough with boxes
• Taobao international shipping is sometimes cheaper

Anyone else shipped stuff home? What's your go-to method?
