I tried to buy a second-hand bike on Xianyu. The seller asked me to 'verify my sincerity' first.
My friend from France needed a bike in Beijing. She went on Xianyu (闲鱼), Alibaba's second-hand platform.Found a nice Giant bike for ¥400. About half the new price.
Messaged the seller.
Seller: "To prove you're serious, please send a ¥50 deposit. I'll hold it for you."
My friend: "Can I see the bike first?"
Seller: "Send deposit first. Then we meet."
Red flag.
She almost sent the money.
Then she remembered my advice: never pay before seeing the item.
She replied: "I'll come see it today. If I like it, I pay in cash. No deposit."
The seller stopped responding.
The Xianyu reality:
Xianyu is China's biggest second-hand marketplace. Millions of listings. Mostly legitimate. But scams exist.
Common Xianyu scams:
1. The "deposit" scam
Seller asks for a deposit to "hold" the item. Disappears after receiving it.
2. The "ship first" scam
Seller refuses to meet in person. Says they'll ship after you pay. Sends a fake tracking number or nothing at all.
3. The "wrong item" scam
You buy an iPhone. You receive a box of rocks.
4. The "wechat transfer" redirect
Seller says "Xianyu fees are too high, let's do this on WeChat directly." You pay. They block you.
How to buy safely on Xianyu:
✅ Always meet in person for high-value items
✅ Test electronics before paying
✅ Pay through the Xianyu platform ( escrow protection )
✅ Check the seller's rating and history
✅ If a deal seems too good, it's probably stolen or broken
✅ Never send money outside the app
The verification barrier:
Here's the catch for foreigners: Xianyu requires real-name verification using a Chinese ID. Most foreigners can't fully verify their accounts.
Workarounds:
• Ask a Chinese friend to help you browse
• Use the app to find items, then message sellers on WeChat
• Stick to verified sellers with high ratings
What my friend eventually did:
She found a bike shop that sells refurbished second-hand bikes. ¥450. Warranty included.
She paid at the shop. Rode it home. No deposit. No drama.
"Xianyu is great if you're Chinese and know the rules. For foreigners, a physical second-hand shop is less stressful."
Alternative platforms:
• WeChat groups: Search " 二手" or ask in expat communities
• Facebook Marketplace: Surprisingly active in Shanghai/Beijing
• This forum's Services & Classifieds board: Obviously biased, but it's here.
