What to actually pack for China: a seasonal breakdown from someone who's been through all four

I keep seeing generic packing lists. "Bring layers." "Comfortable shoes." Not helpful.

Here's what you ACTUALLY need, season by season, city by city.

SPRING (March–May)

Weather: Unpredictable. 5°C in the morning, 22°C by noon. Windy. Occasional sandstorms in Beijing.

Pack:
• Light down jacket or packable puffer
• T-shirts for layering
• One light sweater
• Jeans or long pants
• A scarf (for wind, not fashion)
• Compact umbrella (essential)

Reality check: You'll take your jacket off at 10 AM and put it back on at 6 PM. Layering isn't advice — it's survival.

SUMMER (June–August)

Weather: Hot. Humid. 35°C+ in most cities. Shanghai and Guangzhou feel like a sauna.

Pack:
• Linen or moisture-wicking everything
• Light colors (dark colors absorb heat)
• One light cardigan for aggressive indoor AC
• Sandals that can handle rain
• High-SPF sunscreen
• Mosquito repellent (southern China = mosquitoes)
• Portable fan (¥20 at any convenience store)

Reality check: You'll sweat through your shirt walking to the metro. Carry a spare.

AUTUMN (September–November)

Weather: The best season. 15–25°C. Clear skies. Dry air.

Pack:
• Light jacket
• Long-sleeve shirts
• One medium sweater
• Jeans
• Comfortable walking shoes
• Light scarf

Reality check: This is the perfect season. You need the least amount of clothing. Pack light.

WINTER (December–February)

Weather: Beijing = -15°C. Dry. Windy. Shanghai = 5°C. Damp. Bone-chilling. Harbin = -25°C. Survival mode.

Pack:
• Heavy down jacket (rated to at least -10°C for Beijing)
• Thermal underwear (top AND bottom)
• Wool socks (multiple pairs)
• Warm hat that covers ears
• Gloves (touchscreen-compatible)
• Scarf or neck warmer
• Insulated boots

Reality check: Indoor heating in northern China is aggressive (25°C+). You'll strip down inside. But going outside feels like stepping into a freezer.

City-specific notes:

Beijing:
• Spring: Sandstorms possible. Bring a mask.
• Winter: Coldest of the major cities. Thermal layers are non-negotiable.

Shanghai:
• Summer: Most humid. Your clothes will never fully dry.
• Winter: Damp cold is worse than dry cold. A ¥90 Uniqlo puffer is your best friend.

Guangzhou/Shenzhen:
• Summer: Hot AND rainy. Daily afternoon thunderstorms.
• Winter: Mild (10–15°C). A light jacket is enough.

Chengdu:
• Year-round: Gray, overcast, humid. Layers always.

Harbin:
• Winter: Survival gear. See my separate Harbin post.

What NOT to pack:

❌ High heels — you'll walk 15,000+ steps daily
❌ Expensive jewelry — pickpockets exist
❌ Too many clothes — laundry services are cheap and fast
❌ Formal suits — unless you're in finance, smart casual is fine
❌ Multiple pairs of shoes — one comfortable pair + one nice pair is enough

What I always pack:
• 5-kg empty space in my luggage (you'll buy stuff)
• A small daypack for daily use
• A universal power adapter
• Portable charger (10,000mAh minimum)
• VPN subscription (tested BEFORE departure)

What's your China packing essential that most people forget?
