My Turkish friend extended his M visa inside China. He thought it was impossible. It wasn't.
My friend Can from Istanbul came to China on a 30-day business visa (M visa). He had meetings in Shanghai and Beijing. Planned to stay 3 weeks. Then his Beijing meeting got pushed back. Then his Shanghai client asked for a follow-up. Suddenly he needed 10 more days.
His visa expired in 5 days.
He thought he had to leave.
He was looking at flights to Seoul, planning a "visa run" — leave China, re-enter, get a new visa.
I told him: "You can extend an M visa inside China. Without leaving."
He didn't believe me.
The process (Shanghai, March 2026):
Step 1: Go to the Exit-Entry Administration Bureau (出入境管理局). In Shanghai, it's at 1500 Minsheng Road, Pudong.
Step 2: Take a number. Wait 40 minutes.
Step 3: At the counter, say: "I need to extend my M visa." Show your passport and visa.
Step 4: They ask why. You need a reason. Can brought:
• A letter from his Shanghai client requesting the extension
• Proof of the delayed Beijing meeting
• His hotel booking for the additional days
Step 5: Fill out the application form. It's in Chinese and English.
Step 6: Pay ¥160. Get a receipt.
Step 7: Come back in 7 working days. Pick up passport with extended visa.
What he got:
A 30-day extension stamped into his passport. Same visa, new expiry date.
Total cost: ¥160 + one day of his time.
Much cheaper than a flight to Seoul and back.
What visas CAN be extended inside China:
✅ M (Business) — with proof of ongoing business
✅ L (Tourist) — sometimes, with proof of travel plans
✅ F (Exchange/Visit) — with invitation letter
✅ Q2/S2 (Short-term family) — with family relationship proof
❌ X1 (Long-term student) — can't extend, must convert to residence permit
❌ Z (Work) — can't extend, must convert to residence permit within 30 days
❌ 240-hour transit — can't extend, must leave on time
What you need for an extension:
• Valid passport
• Current visa (not expired yet — apply BEFORE expiry)
• Reason for extension (letter, booking, invitation)
• Passport photo (some offices have photo booths)
• Application fee: ¥160 for most nationalities
Important rules:
• Apply at least 7 days before your visa expires
• You can only extend ONCE per entry (usually)
• The extension is granted at the discretion of the officer
• If rejected, you must leave before the original expiry
Can's reaction: "I was ready to spend $400 on a Seoul trip. Instead I spent ¥160 and got an extra month. Why doesn't anyone talk about this?"
Because most people don't know.
The extension option isn't widely advertised. But it's real. And it saves you from pointless visa runs.
Anyone else extended a visa inside China? Which city? How did it go?
