My Swiss friend hiked Huangshan in 1 day and couldn't walk for 3 days after
My friend Lukas from Zurich is fit. He runs marathons. He thought Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) would be a nice day hike.He was wrong.
The stats he didn't research:
Huangshan involves over 10,000 stone steps and a cumulative ascent of roughly 2,700 meters. Even fit hikers find the constant vertical incline brutal.
Lukas took the Yungu Cable Car up at 8 AM (already too late — the tour groups arrive after 8:30). He planned to hike the West Sea Grand Canyon, loop to Bright Summit, and descend by 4 PM.
What actually happened:
By 11 AM, his knees were screaming. By 2 PM, he was out of water. By 4 PM, he was still at Bright Summit, 2 hours from the nearest cable car.
He missed the last cable car down. Had to hike 1,200 steps to the Tangkou exit in the dark with a headlamp.
Got to his hotel at 8:30 PM.
Couldn't walk properly for 3 days.
Lukas: "I've done the Swiss Alps. I've done the Tour du Mont Blanc. Huangshan broke me. The stairs never end. You go up, then down, then up again. There's no rhythm. It's psychological warfare."
How to actually do Huangshan right:
1. Start at 5:30 AM
Be at the Tangkou transfer hub before the first bus. Beat the tour groups. The first 3 buses are golden.
2. Stay on the mountain overnight
Book a summit hotel (¥400-800/night, basic). Watch sunrise. Descend after breakfast when your legs are fresh.
3. Use cable cars strategically
Don't try to hike the whole thing. Take the Yungu Cable Car up, hike the Back Mountain loop, descend via Yuping Cable Car.
4. Bring knee support
Seriously. The descents destroy knees. Trekking poles help too.
5. Carry 1.5L+ water
Supplies on the mountain are expensive (¥10 for water, ¥25 for instant noodles). Bring your own.
6. Check the weather for 'cloud sea'
The famous sea-of-clouds view needs: rain the day before + sunny morning. Amap app has a daily 'Cloud Sea Probability' — aim for 70%+.
Tickets (2026):
• Park entry: ¥190 (Mar–Nov), ¥150 (Dec–Feb)
• Yungu Cable Car: ¥80 up, ¥80 down
• Yuping Cable Car: ¥90 up, ¥90 down
• West Sea monorail: ¥100
How to get there:
• High-speed rail to Huangshan North Station, then bus to Tangkou (1 hour)
• From Shanghai: 2.5 hours by HSR
• From Hangzhou: 1.5 hours by HSR
Best time:
• Spring (Apr–May): Flowers, mild temps
• Autumn (Sep–Oct): Clear skies, red leaves
• Winter: Half-price tickets, fewer crowds, snow-covered peaks are magical
Lukas, 3 days later, looking at his photos: "Would I do it again? Yes. But with a summit hotel, a 5 AM start, and significantly more humility."
Anyone else underestimated Huangshan?
