I moved from Shanghai to Chengdu and my rent dropped 60%. My quality of life doubled.
I spent 4 years in Shanghai. Great city. Incredible food. Exhausting rent.Last year, I moved to Chengdu. Here's the honest math.
The cost comparison:
ExpenseShanghaiChengduDifference
1-bedroom apartment (city center)¥7,000–12,000¥2,500–4,500-60%
Metro ride¥3–7¥2–5-30%
Dinner at mid-range restaurant¥120–200¥60–100-50%
Coffee (specialty)¥35–45¥20–30-40%
Gym membership¥400–800/month¥200–400/month-50%
Taxi (5km)¥25–35¥15–20-40%
My total monthly expenses dropped from ¥18,000 in Shanghai to ¥9,500 in Chengdu.
That's ¥102,000 saved per year.
What I gained:
Space: My Chengdu apartment is 90 sqm. My Shanghai apartment was 45 sqm. Same rent.
Time: My commute in Shanghai was 50 minutes each way. In Chengdu, it's 20 minutes. I get 5 extra hours per week.
Food: Chengdu food is better. Sorry, Shanghai. Hot pot, chuan chuan, rabbit heads, dan dan noodles — it's not even close.
Pace: People in Chengdu actually relax. Tea houses are full at 2 PM on a Tuesday. Parks have people playing mahjong at noon. Shanghai feels like a competition. Chengdu feels like living.
Nature: 2 hours from the city: mountains, pandas, Jiuzhaigou. Shanghai has... the Bund. Which is nice. But it's not a mountain.
What I lost:
International community: Shanghai has 200,000+ foreigners. Chengdu has maybe 20,000. English is less common.
Career opportunities: If you're in finance or fashion, Shanghai wins. If you're in tech, Chengdu is competitive (Tencent, Alibaba, ByteDance all have offices here).
Direct flights: Shanghai has flights everywhere. Chengdu's international connections are growing but limited.
English services: Hospitals, banks, government offices — English support is weaker in Chengdu.
The Tier-2 city sweet spot:
Best Tier-2 cities for foreigners:
Chengdu: Food, relaxed lifestyle, tech jobs, pandas
Hangzhou: Beautiful, tech hub (Alibaba HQ), close to Shanghai
Nanjing: Historic, educated population, good infrastructure
Xi'an: Historic, affordable, growing international community
Xiamen: Coastal, mild climate, clean air
Changsha: Entertainment capital, cheap, spicy food
Suzhou: Close to Shanghai, classical gardens, manufacturing hub
Cost of living index (vs New York City = 100):
• Shanghai: 56
• Beijing: 55
• Shenzhen: 56
• Chengdu: 42
• Hangzhou: 45
• Xi'an: 41
• Xiamen: 45

My honest take: "If you're under 30 and building a career, Shanghai might be worth the cost. If you're over 30 and want a life, Tier-2 cities are underrated. I should have moved sooner."
The 2026 trend: Rent in Tier-1 cities has dropped 10–20% from 2023 peaks. But Tier-2 cities are still significantly cheaper. The gap is narrowing, but it's still massive.
Anyone else made the Tier-1 to Tier-2 move? Was it worth it?
