My friend took a soft sleeper train from Beijing to Xi'an. She said it was better than business class.

My friend Clara from Vienna had a choice: fly Beijing to Xi'an (2 hours + airport time) or take the overnight soft sleeper train (11.5 hours).

She chose the train. I thought she was crazy.

The setup:

Train: Z19, Beijing West to Xi'an. Depart 8:18 PM, arrive 7:48 AM.
Ticket: Soft sleeper, lower bunk. ¥415.

What a soft sleeper actually is:

• 4 beds per compartment (not 6 like hard sleeper)
• Actual door that closes
• Clean sheets, pillow, blanket
• Small table between lower bunks
• Reading light
• Luggage storage under lower bunks
• AC/heating
• Toilet and washroom at end of car
• Hot water dispenser for tea and noodles

Clara's experience:

Boarding: Showed passport. Found her compartment. Three Chinese roommates: a grandmother, her daughter, and a young guy with headphones. They smiled. Clara smiled back. Nobody spoke English.

Evening: The grandmother offered Clara sunflower seeds. Clara accepted. They ate seeds and communicated through gestures for 20 minutes.

Sleep: The train is noisy. Wheels on tracks. Announcements. Snoring. But the bed was surprisingly comfortable. Clara wore earplugs and slept 7 hours.

Morning: Woke up to the grandmother making tea with the hot water dispenser. Offered Clara a cup. They watched the sunrise over Shanxi province together.

Arrival: Stepped off the train in Xi'an at 7:48 AM, fully rested, ready for the day. No airport hassle. No taxi from the airport.

The hard sleeper alternative:

Hard sleeper is cheaper (¥260) but has 6 beds per open compartment - no door. Still comfortable, but less privacy. Good for budget travelers.

The deluxe option:

Some routes have deluxe soft sleeper - 2 beds per compartment, private bathroom, TV. Costs about ¥800-1,000. Basically a hotel room on wheels.

Booking tips:

• Book 15 days ahead on 12306 or Trip.com
• Lower bunk is best (most space, easiest access)
• Upper bunk is cheapest but you can't sit up straight
• Middle bunk is the awkward compromise
• Bring earplugs, eye mask, and snacks
• Download entertainment - no WiFi on most trains

Clara's verdict: "I arrived in Xi'an rested, fed, and with a new grandmother friend. When's the last time a flight gave you that?"

Anyone else taken an overnight sleeper train in China?
