I got scammed by a fake taxi at Beijing Capital within 30 minutes of landing
My friend from Poland landed at Beijing Capital Terminal 3. Exhausted. Jet-lagged. Just wanted a shower.A guy in a white shirt approached him inside the terminal. "Taxi?" he asked. "Fixed price. No meter. ¥300 to city center."
My friend thought: "That's expensive but at least it's fixed. No surprises."
He got in.
The car:
It was a black sedan. Not a standard Beijing taxi (which are two-tone). No meter. No taxi license visible.
The driver took him to his hotel. The drive took 45 minutes. The driver was friendly, asked about his trip, offered to be his "private driver" for the week.
My friend paid ¥300.
The next day:
He took a real taxi from his hotel back to the airport. Metered. Official.
Cost: ¥95.
He overpaid by ¥205. For a 30-minute ride.
How the scam works:
The fake taxi:
• Operates inside the terminal (sometimes even before customs)
• Wears a white shirt and holds a sign
• Quotes a "fixed price" that's 3-5x the real cost
• Uses an unmarked black car
• Targets tired, confused foreigners
The fake ride-hailing:
• Someone approaches you saying "Didi?"
• Asks you to cancel your real Didi and go with them instead
• Charges 2-3x the app price
How to avoid it:
Option 1: Official taxi queue
• Follow the signs to the official taxi stand outside the terminal
• It's usually a long line. That's good — it means it's official.
• Taxis are two-tone ( Beijing: red/silver or yellow/black).
• They use meters. Always.
Option 2: Didi (the app)
• Book through the app. Don't accept offers from random people.
• Meet at the designated pickup point.
• Price is fixed before you get in.
Option 3: Airport Express + Metro
• Beijing: Airport Express to Dongzhimen (¥25), then metro anywhere. Total: under ¥30.
• Shanghai: Metro Line 2 from Pudong (¥4-8).
• Guangzhou: Metro from Baiyun (¥2-10).
Option 4: Hotel shuttle
• Some hotels offer free or paid pickup. Book in advance.
The real costs (2026):
• Beijing Capital to city center: ¥80-120 (real taxi)
• Beijing Daxing to city center: ¥150-200 (real taxi) or ¥35 (Airport Express + metro)
• Shanghai Pudong to city center: ¥150-180 (real taxi) or ¥7 (metro)
• Guangzhou Baiyun to city center: ¥100-130 (real taxi) or ¥5 (metro)
My Polish friend's lesson: "The guy in the white shirt looked so professional. He had a clipboard. I thought he was official. He was just a very well-dressed scammer."
Anyone else get hit by the airport taxi scam?
