I tried to link my Chase credit card to WeChat Pay. It failed 6 times before I gave up.

My friend from Chicago read online that WeChat Pay now accepts foreign credit cards. "Great!" he thought. "I don't need Alipay. I'll just use WeChat."

He spent 45 minutes trying. It didn't work.

The process:

Step 1: Download WeChat. Register with his US phone number.
Step 2: Go to Me → Pay → Wallet → Cards → Add Card.
Step 3: Enter Chase Sapphire card details. Visa.
Step 4: Enter billing address.
Step 5: Click confirm.

Error: "Card not supported. Please try another card."

Attempt 2:

He tried his Capital One card. Same error.

Attempt 3:

He tried his debit card. Same error.

Attempt 4:

He changed his WeChat region to "China mainland." The app asked for a Chinese ID number. He doesn't have one.

Attempt 5:

He tried linking through "WeChat Pay International" which apparently exists for tourists. But it required him to scan a QR code at a merchant first to activate. He wasn't in China yet.

Attempt 6:

He called Chase. The rep said: "There's no block on our end. This is a WeChat issue."

He gave up.

The reality of WeChat Pay for foreigners:

WeChat Pay does accept some foreign cards. But it's unpredictable.

Cards that sometimes work:
• Some Visa cards from specific countries (UK, Singapore, Malaysia)
• Some Mastercard debit cards
• Chinese-issued cards (obviously)

Cards that usually DON'T work:
• Most US-issued credit cards
• Most prepaid cards
• Most virtual cards
• Cards from certain African and South American countries

The reason:
It's not just WeChat. It's the issuing bank, the card network, and China's forex regulations all intersecting in unpredictable ways.

What actually works:

Option 1: Alipay (more reliable)
• Alipay accepts more foreign cards than WeChat
• Setup is easier
• Works at 95% of merchants
• BUT: You can't send money to friends or red packets with a foreign card

Option 2: Get a Chinese bank account
• Open an account at ICBC, Bank of China, or HSBC
• Link that card to WeChat
• Works perfectly
• Requires residence permit and patience

Option 3: Ask a Chinese friend
• Send them money via Wise or PayPal
• They send you RMB via WeChat
• Technically a gray area but very common
• Trust required

Option 4: Cash + Alipay combo
• Use Alipay with your foreign card for 95% of payments
• Carry ¥500 cash for the rare merchant that only takes WeChat

My friend's solution:

He downloaded Alipay. Linked his Chase card on the first try. It worked immediately.

He's been in China for 3 weeks. He's used Alipay 200+ times. He's used WeChat Pay zero times.

"I wasted 45 minutes trying to make WeChat work. Alipay took 5 minutes. Sometimes the answer isn't to keep trying. It's to try the other app."

Anyone else had issues with WeChat Pay? Did you find a workaround?
