My tech-obsessed friend spent a weekend in Shenzhen and visited 0 tourist attractions.

My friend from Silicon Valley came to China. Everyone told him: 'See the Great Wall. Visit the Forbidden City. Walk the Bund.'

He spent 3 days in Shenzhen and didn't see a single tourist site.

He saw the future instead.

Day 1: Huaqiangbei

He walked into the SEG Electronics Market. 10 floors. Thousands of stalls.

Floor 1: Phone cases, chargers, cables. Every color. Every brand.
Floor 3: Drones. He held a DJI Mini that costs $200 less than in the US.
Floor 5: Raspberry Pi clones. Arduino kits. Sensors. LEDs.
Floor 7: Custom PCB manufacturing. Drop your files in the morning, pick up boards in the afternoon.
Floor 9: Robotics parts. Motors. Servos. 3D printer filament.

He bought a phone case with a built-in fan (¥35). A USB-C cable that glows (¥12). A 20,000mAh power bank the size of a credit card (¥89).

"This isn't a market. It's a hardware engineer's church."

Day 2: DJI Flagship Store

He visited the DJI store in Shenzhen Bay.

It's not a store. It's a museum.

Drones hanging from the ceiling. FPV simulators. A flight cage where you can test-fly drones indoors.

He spent 2 hours talking to a sales engineer about the Matrice 30T thermal drone. The guy knew more about aerial cinematography than most Hollywood DPs.

He didn't buy anything. He just wanted to talk.

Day 3: BYD & EVs

He test-drove a BYD Seal.

0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds. Interior that rivals a Tesla Model S. Price: ¥220,000 ($30,000).

The dealership had 20 EVs on the lot. BYD. NIO. Xpeng. Li Auto. Zeekr.

He sat in a NIO ET7. The seats massaged him. The car talked to him. The sunroof was a single pane of glass from front to back.

"I walked out wondering why anyone in California still buys a Camry."

What makes Shenzhen different:

It's not a tourist city.
Shenzhen was a fishing village in 1980. Now it's a city of 17 million people and the world's hardware capital. It has almost no historical sites. What it has is innovation.

Everything is faster.
Metro trains every 2 minutes. Food delivery in 20 minutes. Package delivery same-day. The city moves at startup speed.

It's younger.
Average age: 32. Everyone is building something. The energy is completely different from Beijing or Shanghai.

It's cheaper.
Dinner: ¥30-50. Metro: ¥2-7. Coffee: ¥15-25. Compared to Shanghai, everything is 30% cheaper.

For tech visitors:

Must-visits:
• Huaqiangbei Electronics Market (metro: Huaqiang Road)
• DJI Flagship Store (Shenzhen Bay)
• Tencent HQ (exterior only - no tours)
• Huawei HQ (exterior - the campus is massive)
• Design Society (design museum in Shekou)

Where to stay:
• Futian or Nanshan districts
• Near a metro station
• Airbnb-style apartments are cheap and plentiful

Getting there:
• High-speed rail from Hong Kong West Kowloon: 14 minutes
• HSR from Guangzhou: 30 minutes
• Metro from Hong Kong: 1 hour

My Silicon Valley friend's verdict: "I didn't see a single temple. I didn't eat at a fancy restaurant. But I held the future in my hands at Huaqiangbei. Shenzhen isn't a place you visit. It's a place you feel the speed of history."
