I came to China on an M visa. My company wanted me to stay longer. Here's how we extended it.
My friend from Mexico came to China on an M visa (business visa) for a 3-month project. The project was going well. His company wanted him to stay for 6 more months. He thought: "I'll just leave and apply for a new visa."
His HR manager said: "No. We can extend it here."
The myth:
Many people think you can't extend a Chinese visa inside China. You have to leave and reapply.
This is false.
You CAN extend many visa types inside China, including M visas, L visas, and sometimes even F visas.
The process:
Step 1: Gather documents
• Passport (original)
• Current visa page (copy)
• Application form (from the Exit-Entry Administration)
• Invitation letter from the Chinese company
• Business license of the Chinese company (copy)
• Proof of accommodation
• Recent passport photo
Step 2: Go to the Exit-Entry Administration
In Shanghai: 民生路 1500号
In Beijing: 安定门东大街 2号
In other cities: Search "出入境管理局"
Step 3: Take a number. Wait. Submit documents. Pay the fee.
Step 4: Pick up your passport 7 working days later.
The cost:
• 7-day processing: ¥160
• 5-day processing: ¥210
• 3-day rush processing: ¥260
The limitations:
You CAN extend:
• M visa (business) - usually up to 90 more days
• L visa (tourism) - usually up to 30 more days
• F visa (exchange/visit) - case by case
You CANNOT extend (usually):
• 30-day visa-free entries
• 240-hour transit visas
• If you've already extended once before
• If you're near the end of your allowed stay (apply at least 7 days before expiry)
Important: Each city has different rules. Shanghai is more flexible than smaller cities. Some cities require you to extend at the SAME office where you originally applied.
My friend's timeline:
Day 1: HR gave him the invitation letter
Day 2: He went to the Exit-Entry office. Took a number. Waited 2 hours. Submitted documents. Paid ¥160.
Day 3-9: Waited
Day 10: Picked up his passport. New visa sticker: M visa, 90 days, multiple entry.
Total cost: ¥160 + 2 hours of waiting.
Much cheaper than flying to Hong Kong and back.
When you SHOULD leave and reapply:
• If you want to convert visa types (e.g., M to Z/work visa)
• If you've already extended once and need more time
• If your current visa category doesn't allow extension
• If you want a multiple-entry visa (extensions are usually single-entry)
Tips:
• Apply at least 7 days before your current visa expires
• Bring a Chinese-speaking friend or colleague (the staff may not speak English)
• Go in the morning (queues are shorter)
• Double-check which documents you need - requirements vary by city
• Keep the receipt they give you - you need it to pick up your passport
My friend's verdict: "I was ready to book a $400 flight to Hong Kong, pay for a hotel, wait 4 days at the visa center, and fly back. Instead I took a ¥20 Didi ride to the Exit-Entry office and spent ¥160. I felt stupid for not knowing this earlier."
Anyone else extended a visa inside China? What was your experience?
