I Used the 240-Hour Visa-Free Transit Twice in One Month — Here's the Real Deal
So I have a confession: I liked China so much during my first 10-day visa-free trip that I literally booked another "transit" two weeks later. And guess what? It worked perfectly.I was kind of nervous the second time though. Like, would immigration flag me? Would they think I was gaming the system?
Spoiler: nobody cared. The officer at Shanghai Pudong just stamped my passport, asked where I was going next, and waved me through. Total time: maybe 4 minutes.
What I Learned From Doing It Twice
The "third country" rule is real, but flexible. My first trip was Japan → China → Thailand. Second trip was Thailand → China → South Korea. Both totally legit. I met a guy who did China → Hong Kong → China and they gave him trouble, so... don't push it. 😅
You DON'T need a printed ticket. First time I printed everything like a maniac. Second time I just showed the booking on my phone. Both worked fine. Screenshot it though — airport WiFi can be weird.
The 240-hour clock is generous. Both times I entered around 2 PM. That meant my clock didn't start until midnight the NEXT day. So I basically got 11 days. Not complaining.
Hotels register you automatically. I stressed about this for no reason. Every hotel just scans your passport at check-in and that's it. You don't need to do anything.
My Favorite 10-Day Route
If you're thinking about doing this, here's what I'd recommend based on my two trips:
• Fly into Shanghai → spend 3 days → HSR to Hangzhou (1 hour!) → 2 days → HSR to Xi'an (6-ish hours) → 3 days → fly out from Xi'an
You get the modern megacity, the beautiful lake, AND the Terracotta Warriors. Perfect mix.
One Thing That Confused Me
At Beijing Capital, the "visa-free transit" counter was just mixed in with regular immigration. I stood in the wrong line for 10 minutes before someone pointed me to the right counter. At Shanghai Pudong it was clearly marked. Just... pay attention to the signs, I guess?
Has anyone else done the 240-hour thing multiple times? Or did you push it to the full 10 days? I'd love to hear your route!
