I crossed from Hong Kong to Shenzhen on foot. The process took 45 minutes. Here's exactly what happened.
My friend from the UK was staying in Hong Kong and wanted to spend a weekend in Shenzhen. He considered the high-speed rail. Then he read about land border crossings. He chose Lo Wu (Luohu). The busiest land border crossing on earth. 100 million passengers per year.
The journey:
Step 1: Hong Kong MTR to Lo Wu
Took the East Rail Line from Kowloon to Lo Wu Station. 40 minutes. ¥45.
Step 2: Exit Hong Kong
Followed the signs. Walked through a long corridor. Arrived at Hong Kong Immigration.
Showed his passport. Fingerprint scan. Stamp. 5 minutes.
Step 3: Health declaration
Scanned a QR code. Filled a form on his phone (in English). Took 2 minutes.
Step 4: Enter China
Walked to Chinese Immigration.
He's British. Eligible for 30-day visa-free entry.
The officer asked:
• "How many days?"
• "Where are you staying?"
• "Purpose of visit?"
He answered. Showed his hotel booking. The officer stamped his passport.
Total time at immigration: 15 minutes.
Step 5: Customs
Walked through the green channel. No bags checked.
Step 6: Into Shenzhen
Exited the building. Suddenly in Luohu District, Shenzhen.
Metro Line 1 right there. He took it to his hotel in Futian.
Total time:
• Hong Kong MTR: 40 min
• Walk to immigration: 10 min
• Hong Kong exit: 5 min
• Health declaration: 2 min
• China entry: 15 min
• Customs: 2 min
• Walk to metro: 5 min
Total: ~80 minutes from Kowloon to Shenzhen metro.
He did it at 10 AM on a Tuesday. Off-peak.
What if it's peak time?
Lo Wu is busiest on:
• Weekend mornings
• Public holidays
• Chinese New Year
• Golden Week
During peak times, foreign nationals have reported waits of 1+ hour. The automated channels are fast (2-5 seconds) but foreigners often need manual inspection.
Other border options:
Futian Checkpoint:
• Hong Kong MTR to Lok Ma Chau. Walk across.
• Usually less crowded than Lo Wu.
• Same process.
Shenzhen Bay Port:
• Bus from Hong Kong.
• More comfortable but can be slow due to traffic.
High-Speed Rail (West Kowloon):
• "Co-location" immigration. Both HK and China immigration in one building.
• Takes 30-45 minutes before departure.
• More convenient but costs more.
Tips for crossing:
• Go early morning (before 9 AM) or late evening (after 8 PM)
• Avoid weekends if possible
• Have your hotel booking ready
• Fill the health declaration before you arrive (saves time)
• Carry cash for the MTR (Octopus card or single journey ticket)
• Your British passport gets 30 days visa-free. Don't overstay.
My friend's take: "I expected a chaotic nightmare. It was surprisingly organized. Two stamps, a QR code, and suddenly I was in a completely different city with different money, different rules, and different food. The border is just a building. The culture shift happens the moment you step outside."
Anyone else crossed the HK-Shenzhen border recently? Which checkpoint did you use?
