Wait, Canada and the UK Are Visa-Free Now?! I Almost Booked a Visa Appointment for Nothing
Okay so I was literally on the Chinese embassy website last month, filling out the COVA form, uploading my passport photo, the whole painful process — when a friend messaged me: "Dude, you know Canadians don't need a visa anymore, right?"I didn't know. I absolutely did not know.
I had been planning a 3-week trip and was about to pay the visa fee and book an appointment. Instead? I just... booked a flight. That's it. No embassy. No forms. No waiting.
The Policy That Saved Me $140 + a Headache
Since February 17, 2026, Canadians and Brits can enter China visa-free for up to 30 days. Not transit — actual entry. You can just... show up.
And we're not alone. As of right now, 50 countries have this 30-day unilateral visa exemption. Most of the EU, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and a bunch more.
But Here's the Catch (Because There's Always a Catch)
It's for 30 days max. I was planning 3 weeks so I'm fine, but if you want to stay longer, you still need a visa.
You can't work. This is tourism/business meetings/visiting family only. Don't try to show up and get a job.
It's extended through December 31, 2026... probably? The government keeps extending it, but they haven't confirmed beyond 2026 yet. I'm assuming they will because it's been working out well, but don't quote me on that.
What I Actually Did
Instead of the visa appointment, I:
1. Checked the NIA website to confirm Canada was really on the list
2. Booked my flight (Shanghai in, Beijing out)
3. Filled out the online arrival card on the plane
4. Walked through immigration with just my passport
Zero stress. The officer barely looked at my onward ticket. Just stamped and smiled.
P.S. The COVA website is actually pretty decent now, if you DO still need a visa. But honestly? Check if you're one of the 50 countries first. Could save you a lot of time.
Did anyone else almost apply for a visa unnecessarily? Or am I just the last person to hear about this?
