I was sent to secondary inspection at Chinese immigration. It took 2 hours and one phone call.

My friend from Nigeria has a Nigerian passport and a valid Chinese tourist visa. He's traveled to 15 countries. Never had an issue at immigration.

Until Beijing Capital.

What happened:

He walked up to the immigration counter. Handed over his passport. The officer looked at it, typed something, then said: "Please wait over there."

He pointed to a waiting area with 8 other people.

Secondary inspection:

He waited 45 minutes. Then an officer called his name.

The questions:
• "What is your purpose in China?"
• "How long will you stay?"
• "Where will you stay?"
• "Who invited you?"
• "What is your occupation?"
• "Have you been to China before?"
• "Do you know anyone in China?"

He answered everything calmly. Showed his hotel booking. Showed his return flight.

The officer went into a back room. Came back 30 minutes later.

"We need to verify your visa. Please wait."

Another 45 minutes.

What was actually happening:

China's immigration system flagged his passport for additional review. This can happen for several reasons:

1. Passport from a higher-risk country
Nigerian passport holders face additional scrutiny. It's not personal — it's policy.

2. First-time visitor with no China travel history
No previous stamps = more questions.

3. The invitation letter
His visa was sponsored by a Chinese company (a friend invited him). The officer called the company to verify.

4. Random selection
Sometimes it's just random. 1 in 50 passengers get secondary inspection.

The resolution:

After 2 hours, the officer returned his passport. Stamped. No explanation. No apology.

"Welcome to China."

Tips for avoiding or surviving secondary inspection:

Before you arrive:
• Have printed copies of everything: hotel booking, return flight, invitation letter
• Know your itinerary. Dates, cities, hotels.
• Have a local contact number.

During inspection:
• Stay calm. It's routine.
• Answer questions directly. Don't volunteer extra information.
• Don't use your phone unless asked.
• If they call your contact, give them the number and wait.

If it takes a long time:
• Don't argue. It makes things worse.
• Ask politely if you can make a call to your hotel or contact person.
• If you miss a connecting train/flight because of the delay, ask for a written note from the officer. Some transport companies will reschedule for free.

Who is most likely to get secondary inspection:

• First-time visitors from certain countries
• Visitors with invitation letters (they verify the inviting party)
• Visitors with unusual travel patterns (e.g., entering from a third country with a complex itinerary)
• Visitors whose visa was issued at a different consulate than their home country
• Anyone with a name similar to someone on a watchlist

My Nigerian friend's take: "I was scared. Two hours in a room with no explanation. But in the end, they just stamped my passport and let me go. It wasn't personal. It was just bureaucracy moving slowly. My advice: arrive with a full battery, a good book, and the patience of a monk."

Anyone else been sent to secondary inspection in China? How long did it take?
