I Took the Wrong HSR Train to Xi'an and Ended Up in a Random City I'd Never Heard Of

This is embarrassing but I have to share it because it's honestly kind of funny in retrospect.

I was at Beijing West Railway Station, rushing to catch my train to Xi'an. I found platform 12, saw a train, checked my ticket — it said G87, the train at the platform said G87. I got on.

Settled into my seat. Put my bag up. Started watching a movie.

About an hour in, I looked out the window and thought "huh, this doesn't look like the route to Xi'an." Then the announcement came on: "Next stop: Shijiazhuang."

I don't even know how to pronounce Shijiazhuang.

What Went Wrong (So You Don't Do This)

Chinese trains often split. My train G87 had two different routes that day — same train number, different destinations, different carriages. I was in carriage 3. Carriages 1–4 went to Shijiazhuang. Carriages 5–16 went to Xi'an.

I had the RIGHT train number and the WRONG carriage.

How I Fixed It
The conductor was actually super helpful. She explained (with a lot of gestures and Google Translate) that I needed to get off at the next stop and transfer.

I got off at Shijiazhuang. Went to the service desk. Showed my ticket. They put me on the next Xi'an train — free of charge.

Total delay: 2 hours. Total stress: moderate. Total lesson learned: huge.

HSR Tips from Someone Who Learned the Hard Way

• Check your carriage AND destination. Train numbers can be shared across routes.
• Arrive 30 minutes early. Beijing West is MASSIVE and confusing. I was rushing because I got there late.
• Your passport is your ticket. Don't lose it. They scan it at entry AND on the train.
• Download Trip.com in advance. It's in English and shows your carriage/seat clearly.
• The train announcements are in Chinese and English. But the English is sometimes hard to hear. Stay alert.

Shijiazhuang Wasn't So Bad Though
While I waited for my transfer, I grabbed some street food near the station. Turned out to be the best lamb skewers I've ever had. Sometimes getting lost works out.

Anyone else have an epic travel fail in China? Please tell me I'm not the only one who got on the wrong train.
