My Google Pixel got 4G in China but never 5G. Here's why.
My US friend bought a Pixel 8 for his China trip. Expected 5G. Got 4G. Always.Why:
China uses different 5G bands. Pixel 8 (US model) lacks n41 and n79.
China bands:
• Mobile: n41, n79
• Unicom/Telecom: n78
Pixel 8 supports: n77, n78 only → 5G on Unicom sometimes, 4G on Mobile always
Phones that work:
• iPhone 12+: n41, n78, n79 — full 5G
• Samsung S21+: n41, n78 — good coverage
Does it matter?
Chinese 4G averages 85 Mbps — faster than many countries' 5G. For 99% of tasks, 4G is fine.
Tips:
• Check your phone's bands before traveling
• China Unicom uses n78 (more foreign phone support)
