I ate my way through Xi'an's Muslim Quarter and didn't stop for 4 hours.
My friend from Italy heard about Xi'an's Muslim Quarter (回民街). She thought it was one street with a few food stalls. It's not.
It's a labyrinth of streets, alleys, and markets. Hundreds of food stalls. Thousands of people. And the smell — a mix of lamb, cumin, bread, and sugar that makes you hungry even if you just ate.
The route:
She started at the main entrance (West Street). She had a plan: eat one thing per stall, walk until she couldn't walk anymore.
Stop 1: Roujiamo (肉夹馍)
"Chinese hamburger." Crispy bread. Slow-cooked pork (or lamb). ¥12.
Stop 2: Yangrou paomo (羊肉泡馍)
Lamb soup with hand-torn bread. You tear the bread yourself. She tore it too big. The chef frowned. ¥35.
Stop 3: Biangbiang noodles (油泼面)
Wide, belt-like noodles. Chili oil. Garlic. ¥15.
Stop 4: Grilled lamb skewers (羊肉串)
10 skewers. Heavy cumin. Heavy chili. ¥30.
Stop 5: Persimmon cake (柿子饼)
Fried. Sweet. Sticky. ¥5.
Stop 6: Pita bread soaked in lamb soup (羊肉灌汤包)
Soup dumplings. Burst in your mouth. ¥20.
Stop 7: Rose mirror cake (玫瑰镜糕)
Steamed rice cake with rose jam. ¥5.
Stop 8: Sour plum juice (酸梅汤)
To wash it all down. ¥8.
The damage:
Total spent: ¥130 ($18)
Total items eaten: 8
Total time: 4 hours
Total regret: zero
Tips for the Muslim Quarter:
• Go hungry. Very hungry.
• The main street (北院门) is touristy. Venture into the side alleys for better food and lower prices.
• Everything is halal. No pork.
• Most vendors don't speak English. Point and pay.
• Come in the evening (6-10 PM) for the best atmosphere.
• Watch your phone and wallet. It's crowded.
Beyond the food:
• The Great Mosque (大清真寺) is hidden inside the quarter. Beautiful. Quiet. Free entry.
• Shops sell dried fruit, spices, and souvenirs
• The call to prayer echoes at sunset
My Italian friend's verdict: "I thought I knew street food. I didn't. Xi'an's Muslim Quarter is not a food street. It's a food universe. I ate 8 meals in 4 hours and I still wanted more."
Anyone else been to the Muslim Quarter? What did you eat?
