My French friend went to Ningxia for wine and ended up riding a camel into a desert sunset.

Claire is from Lyon. She knows wine. She does not know deserts.

When she told me she was flying to Yinchuan — capital of Ningxia, a region I'd mentally filed under "probably near Mongolia?" — I assumed she'd gotten her provinces confused.

"Ningxia has some of the best cabernet sauvignon in Asia," she said, very Frenchly. "And a desert. I want to see both in one day."

I looked it up. She was right. I felt stupid.

Why Ningxia is suddenly on the map:

In early 2026, Yinchuan reported a 280% increase in international visitors compared to the previous year.

The reasons are stacked:

[*] The wine — Ningxia sits on the same latitude as Bordeaux. The Helan Mountain East region has over 200 wineries and has won international awards. French winemakers have consulted there for years. Claire recognized two producer names from her local wine shop in Lyon.
[*] The desert — The Tengger Desert is accessible within an hour from Yinchuan. Camel rides, yurts, sandboarding. Claire sent me a photo of herself on a camel wearing a sundress and hiking boots. Very on-brand.
[*] The new rail line — Yinchuan is now reachable by HSR from Beijing in about 8 hours, and from Xi'an in roughly 3.5 hours.
[*] English signage at the airport. English menus at major wineries. Tourist police who actually help.

Claire's itinerary (5 days):

[*] Day 1: Arrive Yinchuan, night market lamb skewers
[*] Day 2: Helan Mountain winery tours (three visited, two spat, six bottles bought)
[*] Day 3: Western Xia Imperial Tombs
[*] Day 4: Tengger Desert — camel ride, sandboarding, yurt stay
[*] Day 5: Back to Yinchuan, flight out

Total cost including flights from Shanghai: about ¥4,200 (~$580). Yurt: ¥180/night. Camel: ¥120. Wine tastings: ~¥80 each.

The catch: English is still limited outside main sites. Claire used Baidu Translate photo mode and pointing. At one rural restaurant she tried to order vegetables and accidentally ordered tripe. "Educational."

Also: the desert gets cold at night. Claire brought a sundress. She borrowed my jacket via WhatsApp while shivering in her yurt. "Next time I'm checking the weather."

Other underrated cities surging in 2026: Dali, Xishuangbanna, Luoyang, Ordos, Zhanjiang. Pattern: new rail line opens → bloggers show up → tourists follow 6 months later.
