I Found the Best Expat Community in China — And It Wasn't on Facebook

Stay2CN Community Post | Events & Meetups

When I first moved to Shanghai, I did what every millennial does: I joined every expat Facebook group I could find.

Most of them were either dead (last post from 2023), dominated by spam ("BEST VPN 100% FREE CLICK HERE"), or weirdly toxic (people arguing about whether China is "good" or "bad" as if it's a binary choice).

Then I found this weekly language exchange at a cafe near Jing'an Temple. And honestly? It changed everything.

Where I Actually Found Community

Language Exchanges (In Real Life)
Not the awkward "hi I'm John I like basketball" kind. The good ones happen at chill cafes where people actually stay for 3 hours, share food, and exchange WeChat contacts. I met my closest friends here — not expats, not locals, just... people who happen to live in Shanghai.

Running Clubs
Shanghai has a surprising number of English-speaking running groups. They meet early Saturday mornings, run along the Bund or through parks, then grab breakfast. Low commitment, high social return. Plus, you get fit.

Board Game Nights
There's a bar in the French Concession that hosts board game nights every Wednesday. Sounds nerdy? It is. But it's also full of genuinely interesting people from every country you can think of.

Volunteering
I volunteered at an animal shelter on weekends. Met people who cared about something beyond work and happy hour. Highly recommend if you're feeling disconnected.

Where NOT to Look (In My Experience)

❌ Large Facebook groups — too big, too noisy, too argumentative
❌ Apps designed specifically for "making friends" — they tend to attract... odd people
❌ Bars that market themselves as "expat bars" — they're fine for a drink, but rarely lead to real friendships
❌ Tinder/Bumble BFF — just don't

The Real Secret

The best community I found wasn't specifically "for expats." It was a mix of foreigners and Chinese locals who happened to share an interest — running, board games, volunteering, whatever.

When everyone is there because they genuinely like doing the thing, not because they're desperate to make friends, the connections are way more authentic.

My Weekly Schedule Now

• Monday: Language exchange (7–10 PM)
• Wednesday: Board game night
• Saturday morning: Running club + breakfast
• Sunday: Animal shelter volunteering

I have a fuller social calendar in Shanghai than I ever did back home. And none of it came from Facebook.

Where did you find your people in China? Or are you still looking?
