SIM & eSIM Guide for Foreign Visitors in China (2025–2026)
Stay2CN Guide | First 72 Hours — Mobile & Internet | Updated May 2026Staying connected in China is crucial. This guide covers everything from physical SIM cards to eSIMs, VPNs, and must-have apps.
Option 1: Physical SIM Card (Recommended for Long Stays)
Where to buy: Airport kiosks, carrier stores, some convenience stores.
Major carriers: China Mobile (best coverage), China Unicom (good value), China Telecom (strong in South).
Cost: ¥100–200 for 30-day prepaid with 10–30 GB.
Required: Passport for registration.
Option 2: eSIM (Best for Short Trips)
• Nomad: ~$12/10GB — best overall, direct China network
• Airalo (Moshi Mosh): ~$15/10GB — routes via HK, reliable
• Holafly: ~$19–49/unlimited — best for heavy users
Activate before you land or on airport WiFi. International eSIMs often do NOT need a VPN for Google/WhatsApp.
Option 3: Pocket WiFi
Rent at airports (~¥30–50/day). Good for groups. Must return at trip end.
Internet Access & VPN
Google, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube are blocked in mainland China.
• Install a VPN BEFORE arrival.
• Recommended: ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark, Astrill
• Hotel WiFi generally works well
• Free airport WiFi requires passport verification
Essential Apps That Work Without VPN
• Alipay — Payment + metro + everything
• WeChat — Messaging + payment
• Didi — Ride-hailing (English available)
• AMap (Gaode) — Navigation (better than Google Maps in China)
• Trip.com — Hotels, trains, flights
• MetroMan — Offline subway maps
Pro Tips
• Download offline maps before arrival
• Save your hotel address in Chinese for taxi drivers
• Screenshot important confirmations (tickets, bookings)
• Carry a portable charger — you'll use your phone constantly
