Guizhou & Guangxi: China's Most Underrated Road Trip Route

Stay2CN Community Update | Off-the-Beaten-Path | May 2026

If you've already done Beijing-Shanghai-Xi'an and want something completely different, consider this: a loop through Guizhou and Guangxi provinces that feels like visiting a totally different country.

I did this route over 10 days and it was the most visually stunning trip I've taken in China.

The Route: Guiyang → Huangguoshu → Xingyi → Nanning → Yangshuo → Guilin

Stop 1: Guiyang (1–2 days)
The capital of Guizhou. Surprisingly modern with great food. Use it as your entry point — there's an international airport with flights from major Asian hubs. The night market near Jiaxiu Tower is incredible.

Stop 2: Huangguoshu Waterfall (1 day)
One of the largest waterfalls in Asia. You can actually walk BEHIND it through a cave. Bring a rain jacket — you will get soaked. Worth every drop.

Stop 3: Xingyi & the Wanfenglin Peaks (2 days)
This is where it gets unreal. Thousands of karst peaks rising from farmland like stone forests. Way less touristy than Guilin but equally beautiful. You can bike through the valleys between the peaks.

Stop 4: Nanning (1 day)
Capital of Guangxi. Mostly a transit stop, but the street food scene is excellent. Try the old youtiao (fried dough sticks) at the night market.

Stop 5: Yangshuo (2–3 days)
Yes, it's on the tourist map, but for good reason. The Li River scenery is iconic. Rent an e-bike, explore the countryside, climb Moon Hill for sunset. Avoid the main street restaurants — the best food is in the back alleys.

Stop 6: Guilin (1 day)
Fly out from here. The Reed Flute Cave is worth a quick visit if you have time.

Why This Route Is Special

• Ethnic minority cultures: Guizhou is home to Miao, Dong, and Bouyei communities with distinct clothing, architecture, and festivals
• Landscape variety: Waterfalls, karst peaks, rice terraces, rivers — you get it all
• Authenticity: Many villages here see almost zero foreign tourists. People are genuinely curious and welcoming
• Affordable: Hotels and food cost half what they do in Shanghai or Beijing

Practical Tips

• Rent a car or hire a driver with a car — public transport between these spots is limited
• Download offline maps — mobile data can be spotty in mountain areas
• Bring cash — some villages don't accept mobile payment
• Learn "thank you" in Mandarin AND local dialects if possible — it goes a long way

Has anyone done a Guizhou/Guangxi road trip? What was your favorite stop?
