Sending Money Out of China in 2026: What Actually Works (Tested Methods)

Stay2CN Community Update | Banking & Finance | May 2026

One of the most common questions I see from long-term expats: "How do I get my money OUT of China?"

It's not as straightforward as wiring money from a Western bank. China has strict foreign exchange controls, and the rules are real. But there ARE legitimate ways to do it. Here's what I've tested and confirmed works in 2026.

Method 1: The Legal Annual Limit (Safest)

As a foreign resident, you're entitled to convert and remit up to $50,000 USD equivalent per year from your legally earned income, provided you can prove it.

What you need:
• Tax payment receipts (个人所得税纳税记录)
• Employment contract
• Bank statements showing salary deposits
• Your passport and residence permit

Process: Go to your bank's foreign exchange window with all documents. Takes 1–2 hours. Money arrives in 2–5 business days.

Method 2: Wise (TransferWise)

Wise works from China for some currencies, but with limitations. You can send FROM a Chinese bank account TO a foreign account, but:
• The amount is limited per transaction
• You'll need to provide documentation for larger sums
• Not all destination countries are supported

It's convenient for smaller amounts (under ¥50,000) but not ideal for large transfers.

Method 3: Alipay International Transfer

Alipay has a partnership with Remitly and other services for international transfers. Works well for:
• Sending money to family
• Smaller amounts (under ¥30,000 per transaction)
• Transfers to bank accounts in supported countries

Fees are reasonable (usually 1–2%), and it's all done through the app.

Method 4: The "Bonus" Route

Some employers structure compensation with a portion paid into an offshore account (Hong Kong, Singapore). This is completely legal if properly declared, and it bypasses the mainland forex limits entirely.

If you're negotiating a new job, this is worth asking about.

What DOESN'T Work (Don't Try These)

❌ Bitcoin/crypto transfers — increasingly monitored and risky
❌ Carrying large amounts of cash undeclared — illegal, and customs will catch you
❌ Using friends' quotas — technically illegal and can get everyone in trouble
❌ Underground exchange services — extremely risky, often scams

My Recommendation

For most expats: Use the legal annual limit for your main savings, and supplement with Wise or Alipay for smaller, regular transfers. Keep all your tax documents organized — you'll need them.

What's your go-to method for sending money out of China? Any tips I missed?
