[Official Guide] China Customs: What You Can Bring In, What You Must Declare & What's Banned (2026)

Stay2CN Official Guide | Border Entry Experiences | May 2026

Getting through Chinese customs doesn't have to be stressful. Know the rules before you fly, and you'll walk through without issues.

The "Green Channel" vs "Red Channel"

Green Channel (无申报通道): If you have nothing to declare
Red Channel (申报通道): If you're carrying restricted items or amounts over the limit

When in doubt, choose Red. It's better to declare something unnecessarily than to get caught with it.

What You MUST Declare

Cash: Over ¥20,000 RMB or over $5,000 USD equivalent in foreign currency

Alcohol: More than 1,500ml (roughly 2 standard bottles of wine/liquor)

Tobacco: More than 400 cigarettes, or 100 cigars, or 500g of loose tobacco

Electronics: Multiple identical items (suggests commercial import). One laptop and one phone are fine. Five iPhones are not.

Animals & plants: Any fresh produce, meat, seeds, or live animals

Medicines: Prescription drugs in large quantities or containing controlled substances

What's Completely Banned

❌ Fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, and dairy products
❌ Seeds, soil, and live plants (without quarantine permits)
❌ Narcotics and most recreational drugs (including cannabis in ANY form — even CBD)
❌ Counterfeit goods and pirated media
❌ Weapons, ammunition, and explosives (obviously)
❌ Printed materials, films, or digital content deemed "harmful to China's politics, economy, culture, or morality" (vaguely defined, but political/religious propaganda is risky)

Medication Rules (Important)

Allowed with prescription: Personal quantities of standard medications
Allowed without prescription: OTC medicines for personal use (reasonable amounts)
Heavily restricted: Anything containing codeine, morphine, or other controlled substances
Banned: Cannabis/CBD products (even if legal in your home country)

Tip: Carry prescriptions and original packaging for ANY medication you bring. A doctor's note in English is helpful.

Electronics & Gifts

• One laptop and one phone for personal use: no problem
• Bringing a drone? Register it with customs; flying restrictions apply
• Gifts valued under ¥5,000 total: generally exempt
• Gifts over ¥5,000: may be subject to import duty

The Declaration Form

You'll receive this on the plane or can fill it at the arrival hall. It's available in English. Keep it simple and honest.
