[Official Guide] Alipay & WeChat Pay for Foreigners: Complete Setup Tutorial (2026)
Stay2CN Official Guide | Payment Setup | May 2026China runs on mobile payments. Without Alipay or WeChat Pay, you'll struggle to buy street food, ride the metro, or even pay for public toilets. This guide walks you through setup step by step.
What You Need Before Starting
• A smartphone (iOS or Android)
• A valid passport
• A foreign Visa or Mastercard (debit or credit)
• A Chinese phone number (recommended but not always required)
• A stable internet connection
Setting Up Alipay (支付宝)
Step 1: Download the Alipay app (search "Alipay" in your app store)
Step 2: Open the app and tap "Sign Up"
Step 3: Enter your mobile number (Chinese number works best; some foreign numbers are accepted)
Step 4: Verify with SMS code
Step 5: Go to "Me" → "Bank Cards" → "Add a Card"
Step 6: Enter your foreign Visa/Mastercard details
Step 7: Complete real-name verification: scan your passport, take a selfie
Step 8: Wait for verification (usually instant, sometimes up to 24 hours)
You're done. You can now pay at any merchant with an Alipay QR code.
Setting Up WeChat Pay (微信支付)
Step 1: Download WeChat (already installed for most people)
Step 2: Go to "Me" → "Services" → "Wallet"
Step 3: Tap "Add a Card"
Step 4: Enter your foreign card details
Step 5: Complete identity verification with passport + selfie
Step 6: Set a 6-digit payment PIN
Note: WeChat Pay's foreign card support is slightly more limited than Alipay. Some cards that work on Alipay won't work on WeChat.
Transaction Limits (Foreign Cards)
Alipay:
• Single transaction: up to ¥5,000
• Monthly limit: varies by card issuer, typically ¥20,000–50,000
• No fees for payments; 3% for top-ups
WeChat Pay:
• Single transaction: up to ¥3,000
• Monthly limit: similar to Alipay
• No fees for payments
What You CAN Pay For
✅ Restaurants, cafes, and street food
✅ Metro, buses, and taxis
✅ Supermarkets and convenience stores
✅ Online shopping (Taobao, JD.com)
✅ Utility bills (if you have an apartment)
✅ Movie tickets and event bookings
What You CANNOT Pay For (Without a Chinese Bank Account)
❌ Peer-to-peer transfers (sending money to friends)
❌ Some subscription services
❌ Didi rides in certain cities (though most work fine)
❌ High-value transfers
Troubleshooting
"Card not supported": Try a different card. Visa tends to work better than Mastercard on Alipay.
"Verification failed": Make sure you're in a well-lit area and your passport photo page is fully visible.
"Payment declined": Check with your home bank — they may block China transactions for fraud protection.
