The Silk Road by Train: A Realistic 2-Week Route for Foreign Travelers
Stay2CN | Off-the-Beaten-Path | May 2026The Silk Road isn't just history — it's a real, doable rail journey. Here's a practical 2-week route you can actually book today.
Route Overview:
Xi'an → Lanzhou → Zhangye → Jiayuguan → Dunhuang → Turpan → Urumqi
Week 1:
Xi'an (2 days): Terracotta Warriors, Muslim Quarter, City Wall. Your Silk Road starts where the ancient one did.
Lanzhou (1 day): Cross the Yellow River, eat hand-pulled beef noodles. Mostly a transit stop.
Zhangye (2 days): The Rainbow Mountains (Danxia) look photoshopped but are real. Plus the Giant Buddha Temple.
Jiayuguan (1 day): The western end of the Great Wall. Fortress in the desert.
Week 2:
Dunhuang (2 days): Mogao Caves (UNESCO) — book ahead. Then camel ride in the singing sand dunes.
Turpan (2 days): Grape valleys, ancient city ruins, extreme heat (it hits 45°C in summer).
Urumqi (2 days): End of the line. Xinjiang Museum, international bazaar, fly out.
Logistics:
• All segments connected by normal-speed trains (sleeper berths)
• Total train time: ~30 hours spread across the trip
• Budget: ¥3,000–5,000 excluding flights in/out
Note: Xinjiang requires extra patience with security checks. Carry your passport everywhere.
