My friend from Mexico flew into Shanghai Pudong at 1:00 AM. Her connecting flight to Xi'an was at 8:00 AM. She had 7 hours to kill.
She expected a closed airport. She was wrong.
What works at Shanghai Pudong at 1 AM:
1. Immigration
24 hours. Always staffed. Even at 3 AM, there are 4-5 officers on duty.
2. Baggage claim
Carousels run until the last bag is off. For late arrivals, this can take 30-45 minutes.
3. SIM card counters
Most close at midnight. But:
• China Unicom at T2 stays open until 2 AM for late flights
• If they're closed, vending machines sell SIM cards (accept cash and mobile pay)
4. Currency exchange
24/7 at Travelex counters in T1 and T2. Rates are worse than city banks but acceptable for emergencies.
5. Food
• McDonald's (T2, domestic departures): 24 hours
• FamilyMart convenience stores: 24 hours
• Some noodle shops: open until 2 AM
• Starbucks: usually closes at 11 PM
6. Transport to the city
• Airport Bus Line 1 to Shanghai Railway Station: runs until last flight lands
• Taxi: always available
• Metro Line 2: stops at 10:30 PM. After that, only taxi or bus.
7. Sleeping
• Hourly hotels (T2, near departures): 24 hours
• Sleeping pods: 24 hours
• Free rest zones with reclining chairs: always open
8. Charging
Charging stations are everywhere and always on.
What DOESN'T work at 1 AM:
• Most shops (duty-free, luxury stores)
• Most restaurants
• Metro
• The maglev train (stops at 9:30 PM)
My friend's 7-hour plan:
1:00 AM — Landed, cleared immigration, got bag
1:30 AM — Bought SIM card from vending machine
2:00 AM — Ate McDonald's (only thing open)
2:30 AM — Found a sleeping pod, set 3 alarms
5:30 AM — Woke up, showered at the hourly hotel (¥50 for a shower)
6:00 AM — Checked in for Xi'an flight
6:30 AM — Starbucks opened. Got coffee.
8:00 AM — Flew to Xi'an
Total cost for the layover: ¥180 (SIM ¥100 + McDonald's ¥35 + shower ¥50)
Tips for late-night arrivals:
• Download offline maps before you land. Airport WiFi sometimes requires SMS verification.
• Carry some RMB cash. Not everything accepts cards at 1 AM.
• If you're staying in the airport, bring a neck pillow and eye mask.
• Set multiple alarms. Airport announcements won't wake you.
• The hourly hotels book up fast during delays. Reserve ahead if possible.
My Mexican friend's verdict:
"I expected to be miserable for 7 hours. Instead I slept in a pod, ate McDonald's at 2 AM, and showered before my next flight. Pudong never sleeps. It just gets quieter."
Anyone else survived a late-night layover in China?
