My cousin Jake — not the dumpling Jake, a different Jake — messaged me last week: "I work remotely for a UK tech company. Can I just live in China for like, six months? Work from cafes?"

I love Jake. But Jake thinks visas are suggestions.

"No," I said. "You can't."

"But I saw a YouTube video —"

"No."

"What if I just —"

"NO."

The hard truth about being a digital nomad in China (2026):

China does not have a digital nomad visa. It does not have a remote worker visa. It does not have a "I'm just chilling here working on my laptop" visa. If you want to live in China and work — even remotely for a foreign company — you need the right paperwork.

Option 1: Tourist Visa (L-visa) / Visa-Free Entry

  • Can you work remotely? Technically no. Legally gray.
  • Duration: 30-60 days typically
  • Reality: Many remote workers DO enter on tourist visas and work quietly from cafes. Common but not legal.
  • Risk: Low if discreet, but no legal basis if issues arise

Option 2: Business Visa (M-visa)

  • For actual business activities — meetings, trade shows
  • Duration: 30-90 days per entry, multi-entry available
  • Best for: People with genuine business reasons who also do remote work

Option 3: Work Visa (Z-visa) + Residence Permit

  • The only fully legal way to live and work in China
  • Requires: A Chinese employer or registered company to sponsor you
  • Duration: Usually 1 year, renewable
  • Taxes: You WILL pay Chinese individual income tax on global income if you're a tax resident (183+ days in China)

Option 4: Student Visa (X-visa)

  • Enroll in a Chinese language program or university
  • Part-time work technically restricted
  • Best for: People who want to study Chinese while figuring out longer-term options

Option 5: Investor/Business Registration

  • Open a WFOE or representative office
  • High barrier: capital, registration fees, ongoing compliance
  • Best for: Serious entrepreneurs, not casual nomads

The tax issue nobody talks about:

If you spend 183+ days in China in a calendar year, you become a Chinese tax resident. China taxes your GLOBAL income — your UK salary, your freelance clients, everything.

The UK has a tax treaty with China that prevents double taxation in most cases. But you still have to FILE in both places, and the paperwork is miserable. Jake's eyes glazed over when I explained this. He stopped asking questions.

What I actually told Jake:

  • Come on a 30-day visa-free or tourist visa
  • Rent an Airbnb or serviced apartment (don't sign a lease)
  • Work from co-working spaces, not cafes (cafes in China are loud, WiFi inconsistent)
  • Do NOT tell anyone you're "working here" — say you're "traveling and freelancing"
  • Leave before your visa expires. Do not overstay.
  • If you love it, come back. If you really love it, find a legitimate visa path.

Co-working spaces that work for foreigners:

  • WeWork (Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Chengdu) — English staff, reliable internet
  • naked Hub (multiple cities) — local vibe, good community
  • SOHO 3Q — cheaper, good for networking
  • Various local spaces — quality varies wildly, always test WiFi first

The bottom line:

China is an incredible place to live. Infrastructure is unbeatable, cost of living is reasonable, food is sensational. But it's not a digital nomad destination like Bali or Lisbon. The visa system is strict, the internet requires a VPN for most foreign work tools, and the language barrier is real.

Jake is going to Thailand instead. He's going to hate the internet speed there and message me again in three months.

Any digital nomads actually made China work long-term? What's your visa setup? And how painful was the tax filing?
