Moving to China with kids (or a partner who didn't sign up for this) is a completely different experience. Here's what we learned.

For Partners Who Don't Work:

The Challenge: They're isolated while you're at the office.
The Fix:
• Get them into expat groups IMMEDIATELY
• Encourage language classes (gives structure)
• Find them a hobby — yoga, art, hiking groups
• Plan weekend trips together

For Kids:

Schools:
• International schools: ¥150,000–300,000/year. Excellent but expensive.
• Bilingual schools: ¥50,000–100,000/year. Good middle ground.
• Local public schools: Free but entirely in Chinese. Tough transition.

Healthcare:
• Kids get sick a lot in the first 6 months (new germs)
• Find a pediatrician at an international hospital before you need one
• Bring familiar medicines from home

Pollution:
• Air purifiers in every room. Non-negotiable.
• Check AQI daily. Indoor play centers on bad days.
• Consider cities with better air (Shenzhen, Kunming, Xiamen)

The Good Surprises:
• Domestic help is affordable (nannies, cleaners)
• Kids learn Mandarin incredibly fast
• Family-oriented culture — people genuinely help
• Travel opportunities are amazing for kids

The Hard Truths:
• Your first 3 months will be chaotic
• Your partner may resent you initially
• You'll question the decision at least twice
• It gets better around month 6

For empty-nesters:
China is amazing without kids. Don't wait until retirement.

Any families here? What's been your biggest challenge?
