Everyone's obsessed with Chengdu and Chongqing for spice, Shanghai for fancy fusion, Beijing for duck. But Guangzhou? Guangzhou just quietly serves the best overall food scene and I'm tired of pretending otherwise.
Dim sum:
The ORIGIN. Not the overseas version — the real thing. Har gow with translucent skin that shatters when you bite. Char siu bao that's actually fluffy, not doughy. Egg tarts that ruin all other egg tarts for you.
Street BBQ:
Every alley has a grill going at 10 PM. Oysters with garlic, lamb skewers, eggplant with minced pork. ¥30 for a feast.
Seafood:
Go to a live seafood restaurant. Pick your fish from the tank. They cook it 15 minutes later. It doesn't get fresher.
Dessert:
Guangzhou has a dessert soup culture (糖水) that's completely underrated. Red bean, taro, ginger milk curd. Sweet but not overwhelming. Perfect after a spicy meal.
The thing that makes it special:
It's not trying to be trendy. It's not Instagram-optimized. It's just... good food, done right, for generations. The restaurants look like crap from the outside but serve miracles on a plate.
Also: it's way cheaper than Shanghai. Like, half the price for the same quality.
If you're planning a food-focused China trip and skipping Guangzhou, you're doing it wrong.
Fight me. Or agree with me. Either way, go eat in Guangzhou.
