Learn this ONE paragraph. Not individual words — the whole thing, as a chunk. Practice it until it flows.
"Wo shi wai guo ren. Wo bu hui shuo Zhong wen. Qing ni bang zhu wo. Wo de ming zi shi [your name]. Wo zhu zai [your hotel]. Wo de dian hua shi [your phone number]."
Translation:
"I am a foreigner. I don't speak Chinese. Please help me. My name is ___. I stay at ___. My phone number is ___."
Why this works:
• It immediately establishes you're not a random person being difficult — you genuinely can't communicate
• "Please help me" (请帮助我) triggers the helper instinct. Chinese people generally WANT to assist lost foreigners.
• Giving your name, hotel, and number gives them concrete information to work with
• It's polite but clear
I've used this exact phrase for:
• Getting a taxi when the driver couldn't read my destination
• When I got separated from my tour group
• At a pharmacy when I needed medicine but didn't know the word
• When my phone died and I needed to borrow a phone
• At a police station reporting my lost wallet
Pro tip:
Write it on a card. Carry it in your wallet. If you panic and forget, just show the card.
Even shorter version:
"Wo bu hui shuo Zhong wen. Qing ni bang zhu wo." (I don't speak Chinese. Please help me.)
