So the high-speed rail was sold out and I needed to get from Kunming to Guilin same day. Options: fly (¥800) or sleeper bus (¥200). I'm cheap. I chose the bus.
The setup:
A "sleeper bus" in China is basically three rows of bunk beds stacked on top of each other inside a coach. You get a thin mattress, a blanket that may or may not have been washed since 2019, and a window that doesn't open.
The experience:
• Departure: 7 PM
• The guy above me snored like a chainsaw from minute one
• The toilet "break" at 11 PM was a roadside ditch. I held it.
• At 2 AM we hit mountain roads. The driver honked at every corner. Every. Single. One.
• At 4 AM someone opened a durian. In a sealed bus. I wanted to die.
• Arrival: 7 AM. Exactly 12 hours. I was a different person.
Would I do it again?
...maybe? If I'm really broke?
The pros:
It's ¥200 vs ¥800. You save a night of hotel. You see countryside you'd miss from a plane. You have a story.
The cons:
Everything else.
If you're considering it:
• Bring earplugs. Mandatory.
• Bring a sleep mask. The bus lights stay on.
• Don't eat before. Trust me.
• Lower bunk is better — less sway, easier toilet access
• Avoid the back row — the engine noise is brutal
High-speed rail is always better if you can get a ticket. But if you can't? The sleeper bus is... an experience.
