I needed to send money home. Heard horror stories. Prepared for the worst. Here's what actually went down.
What I brought:
• Passport
• Residence permit
• 6 months of bank statements
• Employment contract
• Tax payment receipts
• Written explanation of why I was sending money
At the bank:
Walked in. Took a number. Waited 20 minutes.
Told the clerk I wanted to wire money abroad. She asked for documents. I handed her the folder. She flipped through it, nodded, and started typing.
No interrogation. No suspicion. No "why do you want to send money." Just... paperwork.
The questions she DID ask:
• "How much?" (¥50,000)
• "Which currency?" (USD)
• "What for?" (savings repatriation)
• "Have you paid tax on this?" (yes, showed receipts)
Total time: 45 minutes Fee: ¥150 + receiving bank fee Exchange rate: Bank rate, not great but not terrible Money arrived: 3 business days later
The catch:
This was within my annual $50,000 quota. If I'd needed more, it would've been a whole different process involving tax bureau approval.
What I learned:
• Having your documents organized is 90% of the battle
• Go to a main branch, not a small sub-branch
• Morning is better — less crowded, staff has more patience
• If they hesitate, ask for the manager. Main branch managers know the rules.
Way less stressful than I expected. The internet makes it sound like Fort Knox. It's really just... bureaucracy with a checklist.
Anyone else sent money home? How was your experience?
