Hear me out. You want to meet locals. You want exercise. You don't want language barriers.
Badminton.
Why badminton specifically:
• Every city has courts everywhere. Parks, gyms, community centers.
• It's HUGE in China. Like, national sport huge. Everyone played it in school.
• You don't need to speak to play. Point, hit, smile.
• It's cheap. ¥20–50 for court rental. Split between 4 people.
• The skill gap doesn't matter — Chinese people will adjust their game to match yours.
How I started:
Saw a group playing in my apartment complex gym. Brought a racket (¥80 from Decathlon). Stood awkwardly nearby until someone gestured "join?" Nodded. Played. Got destroyed. Had fun.
Now I play every Sunday. I know maybe 20 words of Chinese related specifically to badminton ("out," "my fault," "good shot"). That's enough.
Other sports that work:
• Table tennis — even easier to find, harder to play well
• Basketball — courts everywhere, very welcoming to foreigners
• Running groups — join Hash House Harriers in major cities
• Swimming — pools are cheap but crowded
Sports that DON'T work as well:
• Soccer — fields are rare, organized leagues are hard to break into
• Tennis — expensive courts, exclusive clubs
• Golf — yeah no
If you're lonely in China, buy a badminton racket. Seriously. Best ¥80 I've spent here.
