My friend Marie from Lyon had a headache. A normal headache. She went to a pharmacy in Beijing.
She pointed at her head and said: "Tou teng." (头痛 — headache.)
The pharmacist nodded. Disappeared behind the counter. Returned with:
Box 1: Pain relief tablets Box 2: Herbal headache medicine Box 3: Vitamin B supplement ("for nerves") Box 4: Heat patches for neck Box 5: Eye drops ("tired eyes cause headaches") Box 6: A box of "cooling tea" (凉茶)
Total cost: ¥87.
Marie stared at the pile. "I just wanted aspirin."
The Chinese pharmacy experience:
Chinese pharmacies don't just sell you what you ask for. They diagnose. They recommend. They layer treatments.
Western medicine + TCM + supplements + external treatments = one comprehensive package.
The good:
• Pharmacies are everywhere (every corner, literally)
• Open late (many 24/7)
• Cheap (most basic meds under ¥30)
• Pharmacists are knowledgeable
The confusing:
• Everything is in Chinese
• Same drug, 20 different brands
• They'll sell you everything related to your symptom
• Some TCM pills have ingredients you can't pronounce
