I was flying out of Beijing Daxing. Had some leftover RMB. Thought I'd grab a nice bottle of Moutai at duty-free.

The cashier asked: "Gift?"

I said no, it's for me.

She looked confused. Then concerned.

The context:

In China, Moutai (茅台酒) isn't really a drink. It's a currency. A social tool. A bribe, basically.

Nobody buys Moutai to drink it alone. You buy it to:
• Impress a business partner
• Gift to your boss
• Seal a deal
• Show respect at a wedding

A ¥3,000 bottle of Moutai at duty-free isn't a bargain. It's an investment in your next business relationship.

What I actually bought:

After the cashier's judgmental stare, I put the Moutai back and bought a ¥45 bottle of 二锅头 (èrguōtóu — literally "second distillation").

The cashier nodded approvingly. "This one," she said, "is for drinking."

Chinese airport duty-free is... different:

What you'll find:
• Moutai (obviously)
• Chinese cigarettes (cartons of them)
• Tea (pu'er, longjing, tieguanyin)
• Silk scarves
• Panda-themed everything
• Chinese skincare brands

What you WON'T find:
• Good deals on Western liquor (taxes are still high)
• Cheap electronics
• Significant savings on cosmetics

The real duty-free hack:

Don't shop at the airport. Shop in the city, get a tax refund at departure.

China's tax refund system (离境退税) works at major stores:
• Minimum purchase: ¥500
• Refund rate: 9-11%
• You get cash back at the airport
• Way better selection in the city than at the airport

What I actually do:
I spend my leftover RMB on:
1. Tea (lightweight, lasts forever)
2. Dried fruit (mango, jujube)
3. A final bowl of noodles at the airport
4. Whatever random snack looks interesting

The Moutai stays on the shelf. I'm not that fancy.
