My British colleague flew into Shanghai Pudong last month. I was on the same flight, a few rows back.
We got off the plane. Walked to immigration. I saw the regular line — probably 200+ people, moving slowly.
Then I saw him get pulled aside by an immigration officer. Not for questioning. The officer pointed at a separate lane with a digital gate.
The "Smart Customs" lane:
He walked up. Placed his passport on the scanner. The gate opened. He walked through. Looked at the camera. Pressed his fingers on the scanner.
90 seconds later, he was on the other side.
I was still in the regular line. I waited 47 minutes.
How it works:
The system uses:
• Passport OCR scanning
• Facial recognition matching
• Fingerprint verification
• AI risk assessment
All in one integrated gate.
Who can use it:
As of November 2025, these lanes are available at:
• Beijing Capital (PEK) and Daxing (PKX)
• Shanghai Pudong (PVG) and Hongqiao (SHA)
• Guangzhou Baiyun (CAN)
• Shenzhen Bao'an (SZX)
• Chengdu Tianfu (TFU)
• Xi'an Xianyang (XIY)
• Xiamen Gaoqi (XMN)
• Hangzhou Xiaoshan (HGH)
• Qingdao Jiaodong (TAO)
• Tianjin Binhai (TSN)
• And expanding to 46 more locations in 2026
For Chinese citizens: Automatic eligibility. For foreigners: Currently limited to frequent travelers and some registered business visitors. Tourists generally can't use them yet.
But the system is expanding. By 2027, the plan is for all eligible foreign nationals to have access.
Why my British friend got access:
He's entered China 12 times in the past 3 years. He's in the immigration database as a "frequent traveler."
The officer told him:
"Next time, look for the green sign. If the gate opens for you, use it. If not, use the regular line."
The privacy question:
Yes, your biometrics are stored. Yes, the system is government-run. Yes, this is China.
If you're uncomfortable with facial recognition and fingerprint storage, these lanes aren't for you. But honestly, if you've entered China in the past 5 years, your biometrics are already in the system.
My take: The line was 45 minutes long. The Smart Customs lane was 90 seconds. I'll take the biometric storage.
Has anyone else used the Smart Customs lanes? How fast was it?
