My Thai friend visited Yunnan and said it was 'more Southeast Asia than China.' She wasn't wrong.

My friend Nok from Bangkok visited Yunnan last month. She expected it to feel like the rest of China — busy cities, skyscrapers, Mandarin everywhere.

Instead, she found:
• Mountains that look like they're from a painting
• Rice terraces carved into hillsides 1,000 years ago
• Minority villages where people wear traditional clothing daily
• A climate so mild she forgot what humidity feels like

Her route:

Kunming (2 days):
The "Spring City." 20°C year-round. Flowers everywhere. She said it felt like Chiang Mai but bigger.

Dali (2 days):
Erhai Lake, ancient town, Bai minority culture. She rented an e-bike and circled the lake in a day.

Lijiang (2 days):
The old town is touristy but beautiful. The Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is genuinely stunning. She took the cable car to 4,500 meters and couldn't breathe.

Yuanyang Rice Terraces (1 day):
The real highlight. She went for sunrise at Duoyishu.

Nok: "I've seen rice terraces in Vietnam and Bali. These are different. They're older. Bigger. The water reflects the sky like a mirror. And there are almost no foreign tourists. Just Chinese photographers and local farmers."

Why Yunnan feels different:

• Altitude: Kunming is at 1,900 meters. Lijiang is at 2,400. The air is thin but clean.
• Minorities: 25 of China's 56 ethnic minorities live here. Bai, Yi, Dai, Naxi, Hani — each with their own language, clothing, and architecture.
• History: Yunnan was its own kingdom for centuries. It joined China relatively recently (Ming Dynasty).
• Food: Spicy but not Sichuan-spicy. Influenced by Southeast Asian flavors. Lots of mushrooms, flowers, and insects.

Practical tips:

Getting around:
• Kunming to Dali: 2 hours by high-speed rail
• Dali to Lijiang: 2 hours by train or bus
• Lijiang to Yuanyang: 6 hours by car (no direct train)

Best time:
• March–May: Wildflowers, mild weather
• September–November: Clear skies, harvest season
• Avoid July–August: Rainy season, landslides possible

What to eat:
• Crossing-the-bridge noodles (过桥米线) — Yunnan's most famous dish
• Steam pot chicken (汽锅鸡)
• Bai minority cheese (乳扇) — yes, cheese in China
• Flower cakes (鲜花饼)
• Pu'er tea — buy it in Yunnan, not online

One warning:
The altitude hits harder than you expect. Even fit people feel it above 3,000 meters. Drink water. Move slowly.

Nok's verdict:
"If someone told me Yunnan was a separate country, I'd believe them. It's the most culturally diverse place I've been in China. And I've been to Xinjiang."

Anyone else been to Yunnan? What was your favorite spot?
