My friend Thabo from Johannesburg wanted a beach holiday. He considered Thailand, Bali, Vietnam. Then I told him about Hainan.
The Hainan visa-free policy:
Since February 2024, 59 countries can enter Hainan visa-free for 30 days.
No advance application. No ETA. Just show up with your passport.
Eligible countries include: UK, Canada, USA, Australia, Germany, France, Russia, Brazil, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, South Korea, UAE, and many more.
Thabo's experience:
He flew Johannesburg → Singapore → Sanya.
At Sanya Phoenix Airport, immigration took 10 minutes.
Officer asked: "How long staying?" — 2 weeks.
"Purpose?" — Tourism.
"Hotel?" — Showed booking.
Stamp. Done.
Thabo: "I thought there'd be paperwork. There was no paperwork. Just a stamp and 'enjoy your holiday.'"
The catch:
You MUST enter Hainan directly. You can't fly into Shanghai or Beijing and then claim Hainan visa-free. Your first port of entry in China must be Hainan.
Direct flights to Hainan from:
• Southeast Asia (Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur)
• East Asia (Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong)
• Russia (Moscow)
• Some European cities (seasonal charters)
If there's no direct flight from your city, fly to Hong Kong or Macau first, then connect to Hainan.
What you CAN do in Hainan:
✅ Tourism
✅ Business meetings
✅ Family visits
✅ Medical treatment
✅ Sports competitions
✅ Exhibitions
What you CANNOT do:
❌ Work
❌ Study
❌ Leave Hainan for other parts of mainland China (unless you get a visa extension)
Thabo's Sanya itinerary:
Day 1–3: Sanya Bay — beach, resorts, seafood
Day 4–5: Yalong Bay — snorkeling, water sports
Day 6: Nanshan Temple — 108-meter Guanyin statue
Day 7–8: Wuzhizhou Island — diving, coral reefs
Day 9–10: Rainforest tour in Yanoda
Total cost for 10 days:
• Hotel (mid-range resort): ¥400/night × 10 = ¥4,000
• Food: ¥200/day × 10 = ¥2,000
• Activities: ¥2,000
• Total: ~¥8,000 ($1,100 USD)
Thabo: "In the Maldives, this would cost $5,000. In Bali, maybe $2,000. In Sanya, it's $1,100 and the beaches are almost as good. Plus I didn't need a visa."
The reality check:
Sanya is not Phuket or Bali. It's more developed, more Chinese-family-oriented, less backpacker-friendly.
The beaches are nice but not world-class. The water is murky compared to Thailand.
But: no visa hassle, direct flights, Chinese infrastructure (fast internet, good hospitals, safe), and surprisingly good seafood.
Pro tip: Avoid Chinese public holidays (May 1, Oct 1, Spring Festival). Sanya gets packed with domestic tourists and prices triple.
Anyone else done the Hainan visa-free trip? How was it? |
