Okay so real talk — the first time I tried to set up Alipay in China, I spent 45 minutes in a 7-Eleven trying to buy a bottle of water while a very patient cashier watched me fail repeatedly. It was... not my finest moment. 😅

So here's what went wrong, and what YOU should do instead:

Mistake #1: I Didn't Bring My Passport
I thought "eh, I'll just link my credit card, no big deal." NOPE. Alipay requires passport verification for foreign cards. I had to walk 20 minutes back to my hotel, grab my passport, and try again. Save yourself the walk — have it ready.

Mistake #2: I Used Hotel WiFi (Slow AF)
The face scan kept timing out because the hotel WiFi was garbage. Pro tip: use your mobile data or find a cafe with decent internet for the verification step. It needs to scan your face in real-time and it's surprisingly picky about lighting.

Mistake #3: I Panicked When It Didn't Work Immediately
I tried like 6 times in a row and got temporarily locked out. Take a breath. If it fails twice, just wait 10 minutes and try again. Or better yet — do it in your hotel room when you're not starving and dehydrated.

What Actually Works (The Easy Way)
1. Download Alipay BEFORE you arrive
2. Add your card in a quiet place with good lighting
3. Have your passport physically with you
4. Smile for the camera (seriously, it helps)
5. Set it up when you're NOT trying to buy something urgently

P.S. The water at that 7-Eleven cost ¥3. The cashier eventually just gave it to me for free because she felt bad. Chinese people are genuinely lovely when you're struggling. ❤️

Anyone else have a hilarious payment fail story? I'd love to hear I'm not the only one.
