I tried to use my foreign credit card at a Chinese gas station. The attendant looked at me like I was from Mars.

My friend from Finland was on a road trip in Guangxi. Rental car. Beautiful scenery. Empty tank.

He pulled into a gas station. Filled up. ¥380.

Walked inside to pay. Handed over his Mastercard.

The attendant looked at the card. Looked at him. Looked at the card again.

Shook her head.
"Bù xíng." (不行 — doesn't work.)

He tried his Visa. Same thing.

He tried his Amex. She laughed.

The China fuel payment reality:

Chinese gas stations almost universally accept:
• Cash (现金)
• Alipay (支付宝)
• WeChat Pay (微信支付)
• UnionPay cards (银联卡)

They almost universally DO NOT accept:
• Foreign Visa/Mastercard
• Foreign Amex
• Apple Pay / Google Pay

This isn't just gas stations. It's also:
• Highway tolls
• Parking meters
• Small restaurants
• Street vendors
• Some public transport

What my Finnish friend did:

He had ¥200 in cash. Not enough.

He asked if there was an ATM. There wasn't.

He asked if he could pay with his phone. He had Alipay but hadn't linked a card yet (he was on day 3 of his trip).

Finally, another customer at the gas station took pity on him. Paid with her WeChat. He gave her the ¥200 cash + his last ¥50 as a thank-you.

How to handle this:

For road trips:
• Carry ¥1,000+ in cash at all times
• Set up Alipay/WeChat Pay BEFORE you start driving
• Keep small bills (¥10, ¥20, ¥50) — some rural stations can't break ¥100

For highway tolls:
• Most highways accept ETC (electronic toll) via Alipay/WeChat
• Rental cars usually come with ETC
• Cash lanes exist but are slower
• Foreign cards: basically useless

For parking:
• Street parking: usually paid via app (scan QR code)
• Mall parking: Alipay/WeChat at the exit gate
• Cash: sometimes accepted, sometimes not

The rental car hack:

When you rent a car in China:
1. Make sure it has ETC installed
2. Link the ETC to your Alipay before leaving the lot
3. Ask the rental company: "Where can I definitely pay with cash if my phone dies?"
4. Download offline maps (Baidu Maps works offline if you download the region)

Credit card acceptance in China (2026 reality check):

Usually works:
• International hotels (Marriott, Hilton, etc.)
• Major malls
• High-end restaurants
• Airports
• Some Starbucks and McDonald's

Usually doesn't work:
• Gas stations
• Highway tolls
• Small shops
• Street food
• Public transport
• Local restaurants
• Parking

The gap:
Even where foreign cards "work," the processing is slow and unreliable. The staff often don't know how to process them.

My Finnish friend: "I thought my Mastercard was universal. It's not. In rural China, it's a piece of colorful plastic. Cash and mobile pay are the only universals."

Bottom line: If you're driving in China, treat your foreign credit card as a backup for hotels only. For everything else: cash + mobile pay.

Anyone else had a "card not accepted" moment in a remote part of China?
