My friend Lucas from São Paulo thought Chinese food was just Cantonese dim sum and Sichuan hot pot.
Then I took him to a Dongbei (Northeast Chinese) restaurant in Beijing.
His mind was blown.
What is Dongbei food?
Dongbei = the three northeastern provinces: Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning. Cold winters. Hearty people. Heavy food.
Guo bao rou (锅包肉):
Sweet and sour crispy pork. Lucas said:
"This is like if Chinese food and Brazilian churrasco had a baby."
Di san xian (地三鲜):
Potato, eggplant, and green pepper stir-fried in garlic sauce. Simple. Perfect. Lucas ate three bowls of rice with it.
Suancai bai rou (酸菜白肉):
Pickled Chinese cabbage with sliced pork belly. Salty, sour, warming. Lucas said it tasted like his grandmother's feijoada but with cabbage instead of beans.
Liang pi (拉皮):
Cold potato noodles with peanut sauce, cucumber, and shredded pork. Lucas declared it "the best cold noodle dish on Earth."
Guo tie (锅贴):
Pan-fried dumplings, crispy on the bottom, juicy inside. Bigger than standard jiaozi. More satisfying.
Why Dongbei food is underrated:
• It's not trendy. No Michelin stars. No Instagram aesthetic. Just honest, heavy, delicious food.
• The portions are MASSIVE. A single dish feeds two people.
• It's cheap. A feast for four costs ¥150-200.
• The restaurants are unpretentious. Plastic tablecloths. Loud conversations. Beer by the bottle.
Where to find it:
Every major city has Dongbei restaurants. Look for:
• Signs saying 东北菜
• Green and red decor (random but common)
• Photos of the dishes on the wall
• Tables full of beer bottles and empty plates
Best cities for Dongbei food:
• Shenyang (the capital of Dongbei cuisine)
• Harbin (hearty winter food + Russian influences)
• Dalian (seafood + Dongbei flavors)
• Beijing (tons of Dongbei migrants opened restaurants here)
The Sichuan comparison:
Lucas's take:
"Sichuan food is exciting. It's an experience. But Dongbei food is comforting. It's what you crave on a cold day after walking for hours. It's the food equivalent of a warm blanket."
Pro tip: Dongbei restaurants are best visited in a group. The portions are huge. Order 2-3 dishes for 4 people. Bring beer. Leave full and happy.
