I downloaded the 12306 app and booked a train ticket with my passport. Here's the full process.

My friend from Canada wanted to take the high-speed rail from Beijing to Xi'an. Everyone said 'use Trip.com.' But she wanted to try the official app — 12306.

It's China's official railway ticketing system. No middleman fees. Full seat selection. Real-time availability.

She heard it was impossible for foreigners. It wasn't.

The setup process:

Step 1: Download
Search "Railway 12306" on the App Store. 200MB.

Step 2: Register
• Name: EXACTLY as it appears on your passport (no nicknames, no abbreviations)
• Nationality: Canada
• Passport number
• Passport expiry date
• Email (Gmail works)
• International phone number (for SMS alerts)

Step 3: Activate via email
Check your inbox for an activation link. Check spam if it's not there. Click it.

Step 4: Real-name verification (the part everyone fears)
Upload a clear photo of your passport's information page.

How long does it take?
• Official estimate: 1 hour to 3 business days
• Her actual wait: 4 hours

Step 5: You're verified.

Booking a ticket:

1. Select departure (Beijing) and arrival (Xi'an)
2. Pick your date
3. Choose your train and seat class:
   • Second class (二等座): ¥515.5, standard seat
   • First class (一等座): ¥824, more legroom
   • Business class (商务座): ¥1,624, lie-flat seat
4. Select your seat: A (window), B (middle), C (aisle), D (aisle), F (window)
5. Payment: WeChat Pay, Alipay, or international Visa/Mastercard

Important: Tickets are released exactly 15 days before departure at 2:00 PM Beijing time. For popular routes (Beijing-Shanghai, Beijing-Xi'an), set an alarm. They sell out in minutes.

At the station:

You do NOT need a paper ticket.

Walk to the gate. Show your passport. The scanner reads your booking. The gate opens.

That's it.

But: At some smaller stations, staff may ask for a booking confirmation. Have the QR code ready in the app.

My friend's advice:

Use 12306 if:
• You're staying in China for a while
• You want to save the service fee
• You don't mind the setup process
• You have Alipay or WeChat Pay

Use Trip.com if:
• You're a short-term tourist
• You want English support
• You don't want to upload your passport
• You need customer service in English

Pro tips:

• Register and verify BEFORE your trip. Don't wait until the last minute.
• Double-check station names: Beijing has Beijing South, Beijing West, and Beijing. Xi'an has Xi'an and Xi'an North.
• Arrive 30-45 minutes early for security checks.
• Save your e-ticket QR code offline.
• If verification fails, re-upload a clearer photo. Or visit any train station ticket window with your passport for instant verification.

My friend's verdict:
"I thought 12306 was a Chinese-only nightmare. It took 4 hours for verification, but after that, booking tickets was easier than Trainline in the UK. And I saved ¥30 in service fees per ticket."

Anyone else used 12306 as a foreigner? How long did your verification take?
