My friend booked a China trip during Golden Week without knowing what Golden Week was. He knows now.

My friend from Germany booked his China trip for October 1-10, 2026. "Perfect weather," he thought. "Autumn in Beijing."

He didn't know about Golden Week.

What is Golden Week?

China's National Day holiday. October 1-7. In 2026, it's a 7-day break (Thursday to Wednesday).

But it's not just "a holiday." It's the largest simultaneous movement of people on earth.

In 2024, over 900 million domestic trips happened during Golden Week. Train ridership alone exceeded 140 million passengers.

My friend found out when he tried to book train tickets.

The train ticket disaster:

He logged onto Trip.com on September 20. Wanted Beijing to Xi'an on October 2.

Sold out.

Every train. Every class. Every seat.

He set an alarm for 8:00 AM Beijing time on September 17 (15 days before, when tickets release).

At 7:59 AM, he was logged in. Payment ready.

At 8:00 AM, he clicked. The page froze.

By 8:03 AM, all tickets were gone.

The hotel price shock:

His ¥400/night hotel in Beijing? Now ¥1,200/night.

His backup hotel? ¥900/night.

He ended up staying in a budget hotel 45 minutes from the city center.

The Great Wall experience:

He went to Badaling on October 3.

Daily cap: 65,000 visitors.

He was one of them. He saw the Wall for approximately 3 seconds between heads.

The queue for the cable car: 2.5 hours.

He gave up and walked back to the bus.

2026 public holidays to avoid:

Spring Festival (Chinese New Year): February 17-24, 2026. The 40-day travel rush. Train tickets sell out weeks in advance. Many businesses close.

Labor Day (May 1-5): Another 5-day break. Crowded but manageable compared to Golden Week.

Dragon Boat Festival: June 19-21, 2026. 3 days. Moderate crowds.

Mid-Autumn Festival: September 25, 2026. Single day. Minimal impact.

National Day Golden Week: October 1-7, 2026. AVOID.

If you MUST travel during Golden Week:

1. Book everything 3+ months in advance.
Flights, hotels, train tickets, attraction tickets. Everything.

2. Avoid famous sites.
Skip Badaling (Wall), Zhangjiajie (Avatar mountains), Huangshan (Yellow Mountain), West Lake (Hangzhou), Guilin. These are nightmares.

3. Pick one city. Stay there.
Don't try to travel between cities. The trains and airports are chaos.

4. Visit smaller neighborhoods.
Beijing's hutongs. Shanghai's French Concession side streets. Chengdu's teahouses. Places domestic tourists skip.

5. Go at night.
Night markets at 9 PM, after the first wave of crowds goes home.

6. Consider a Yangtze River cruise.
Ships have fixed capacity. You move constantly instead of competing for space.

7. Arrive at stations 60-90 minutes early.
Security queues are brutal.

Better alternatives:

• Late September (just before Golden Week)
• Mid-October (just after)
• April-May (excluding May 1-5)
• November (autumn colors, fewer crowds)

My German friend's revised plan: He rescheduled his entire trip to October 15-25.

"I came to China to see the Great Wall. Instead I saw the back of 65,000 heads. Golden Week is not a holiday. It's a warning."
