I applied for a Chinese visa in New York. The online pre-review alone took 12 days.

My friend from Boston needed a Chinese tourist visa. She lives in New York jurisdiction. She started the process 4 weeks before her trip.

She almost missed her flight.

The 2026 visa process:

China now uses the COVA (China Online Visa Application) system + online preliminary review.

Step 1: Fill the online form
She spent 3 hours on cova.mfa.gov.cn.
• Personal details
• Passport info
• Travel history (last 10 years!)
• Employment history
• Family details
• Chinese hotel bookings
• Invitation letter (she had one from a friend)

One mistake: She listed her job title slightly differently from her LinkedIn. The system flagged nothing. Yet.

Step 2: Submit and wait for pre-review
Status: "Preliminary review is in progress."

She checked daily.

Day 3: Nothing.
Day 7: Nothing.
Day 10: Nothing.
Day 12: "Please submit your passport to the consulate."

Step 3: Submit passport (no appointment needed)
She went to the consulate in New York. Took a number. Waited 45 minutes. Submitted her passport, photo, printed form, and supporting documents.

Step 4: Processing
Official time: 4 business days.

Her actual time: 6 business days.

Why? They asked for a supplementary document: proof of her previous Chinese visa (she'd visited in 2019). She had to email a scan. That added 2 days.

Step 5: Pickup
She got her passport back with a 30-day L visa.

Total time from application to visa in hand: 21 days.

The reality by city (2026):

CityStandard CasesComplex CasesNotes
New York4-6 weeks6-8 weeksSlowest. Online pre-review alone can take 2 weeks.
Chicago3-4 weeks5-6 weeksRelatively smooth for standard cases.
LA2-3 weeks4-5 weeksNormal processing. Business visas may take longer.
SF3-4 weeks5-6 weeksSensitive industries (tech, aerospace) face extra review.
DC3-4 weeks5-6 weeksSteady but high volume.

Complex cases include:
• Previously held Chinese nationality
• Worked in government, military, or religious organizations
• Employed by large multinational tech companies
• Travel history to certain countries
• Business/work visas (not tourist)

Tips for 2026 applicants:

• Start 6-8 weeks before travel if applying in New York
• Start 3-4 weeks if applying in LA/Chicago/DC/SF
• Fill the COVA form exactly as your documents show
• Book refundable flights until your visa is approved
• Check "Track my application" daily
• Respond to document requests immediately
• Some consulates no longer require appointments — just show up during visa hours

My friend's lesson:
"I thought 4 weeks was plenty of time. I was wrong. The online pre-review is the bottleneck, not the passport processing. Start early. And double-check every field on the COVA form. One inconsistency can cost you days."

Anyone else applied for a Chinese visa recently? How long did it take you?
